Gemini Air Cargo DC-10 to Africa Video - For Those Interested

Someone just forwarded this to me. It looks like one of those "flight in the cockpit" videos you see ads for in the industry mags. Filming takes place on flights out of Belgium to Africa (including Libya!!!!). Should give someone interested in that type of flying with a pretty good perspective. That is a wide cockpit! Might be good for those DC-10 newhires at World to familiarize yourself before class.

So, what's the deal with the DC-10 fleet at Gemini (is it being phased out) and what are the hiring expectations for the rest of 07? Are most newhires going into the 10 or the MD11?

Check it out:

Hiring through the first qtr 08. The 10s depend on a certain contract coming to fruition. If it does they will keep at least 6 if not we will go down to 4.

All new hires are going to the 11.

How does life on the 10 compare to life on the MD11? Are the routes that different? Does one type do more adhoc work than the other?

Should a newhire necessarily have a preference beyond the convenience of the glass cockpit?

Life CAN be quite different between the two fleets, especially when the tens are flying out of Miami to S. America. Now that they are flying more Europe and Africa, trips are looking more equal. Tens do more AMC flying than the 11's do. Contracts come and contracts go, so nothing is ever the same for long. It's kind of like Forest's box of chocolates. You'll never know what you're gonna get.
Same goes for new hire "preference". They'll put you where they need you, so not much "choice" in what type aircraft you get. The pay is the same, with the 11's breaking guarantee more in the past. I came over to the 11 to get away from Miami and maybe do some JFK-BRU flying. That contract ended right after I finished training and then they pulled the 10's out of MIA. Go figure. All that could change next month. The good thing is that I've always gotten a paycheck and had a job to go to for the last 10 years. The glass is nice, but the 10 is a heck of an aircraft as well. Guys are getting typed in the 11 because of the need for an IRO. There's a great group of pilots here and I always enjoy going to work with them, and I've been to more places in the world than many folks could imagine.
Good luck

Well put.....

I updated my standing bid

1 DC10 Capt
2 MD11 Capt

Hopefully our new contract will lead to some growth........

Fog, you are long overdue for Captain upgrade, amigo. Having flown with you in both aircraft, I know you are more than ready.
I look forward to seeing that happen.
