I was flying up the East coast yesterday and ATC mentioned a possible gear up landing at TEB. Anyone got any details?

Faulty landing shuts Teterboro
Tuesday, January 17, 2006

TETERBORO - A twin-engine plane's nose gear collapsed as it landed at Teterboro Airport on Monday evening, forcing officials to close the airport for an hour.

There were no injuries or fire in the incident, said Pasquale DiFulco, a spokesman for the Port Authority, which operates the airport.

But the latest incident raised a red flag with Governor Codey, who said he intends to call Port Authority Chairman Anthony Coscia today to discuss proposed safety upgrades at the airport.

"The situation is out of control," Codey said, referring to several accidents in 2005, including one Feb. 2 when a chartered corporate jet sped off the runway and barreled across six lanes of Route 46 before crashing into the Strawberry clothing warehouse after an aborted takeoff.

Twenty people were injured in that crash, which prompted demands from local and state officials for barriers at the end of the airport's runways.

In Monday's incident, the nose gear of a twin-engine Cessna 414 collapsed as it landed on Runway 24 at 3:11 p.m., said Holly Baker, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, which is conducting an investigation. She did not know the pilot's identity.

There were no passengers aboard the plane. The airport was closed for an hour, but officials did "reopen one runway" while the plane was moved, DiFulco said.

Codey, noting that the airport is located in a densely populated region of Bergen County - its 827 acres occupy parts of Teterboro, Moonachie and Hasbrouck Heights - said he feared the airport was "another accident away" from a catastrophic incident.

After the February accident, Port Authority officials said they would install barriers at the end of the runways to keep planes from skidding onto roads around the airport.

There is a typical over exageration from a politician. I might be wrong but Route 46 only has 2 or 3 lanes not 6 lanes.

I think it's got 3 going each way. He just totaled up the # of lanes...typical sensationalism (sp?) at work.

It's pretty cool that they are putting barriers up. Now when you run off the runway you'll just go SPLAT. Sweet.

Maybe they will put ramps at the end of the runway that launch the plane OVER the traffic and into the beautiful surrounding community.;)

Interesting....I saw the plane about 30 seconds after it came to rest adjacent to taxiway L and it was sitting on it's belly!

Word was that there was some instructing going on, although the prelim report shows one crewmember on board, and that it's a C340.

I just looked at the FAA website and out of 28 accident reports listed from over the weekend, 10 were a result of gear-up landings or gear failures during landing. Seems like a higher than normal ratio for this past weekend.

The politicians around TEB have been trying for years to close the airport. First they restict by noise, then weight. It really started getting warm up there when the Baron crashed in the burb just west of the field. When the state of NJ feels the financial loss (in taxes and taxes and taxes) from TEB they'll realize just home badly that f-d up. Morristown is a great airport but is no where near capable of handling the capacity of TEB. That leaves SWF, HPN and other NY state airports as options. I'd bet a C note that most of those politicians fly/charter out of TEB when traveling!

Was floogin into HPN when this happened. Lot of P-off Netjet guys that had to divert into HPN and surrounding fields. Its amazing how one little gear-up/malfunction can screw up flights for hours after.
Think they should have a bulldoser plow disabled ACFT to the side and resume ops.
