What's going on with gas prices?? I left the house this morning and the corner store was selling regular unleaded for $1.87 and when I get back tonight, it was up to $1.99.. I live in a very residential area about 10 miles from the Vegas strip.. Gas on the strip is $2.15 for regular unleaded..

The local paper said the "experts" expect it to top at over $3.00 per gallon this summer..

FUK... Who the he!! can afford $3 for a gallon of gas....

"bend over!"
What a lucrative business it would be to be top dog at a petroleum company...

Gas in Europe when I was there in the mid-80's = $3.50/gallon.

Gas costs much more in the rest of the world (except for the Middle East). That's why most cars are compacts, public transportation is refined and widespread, and it's rare for a family to have more than one car.

Maybe $3 gas will kill the Excursion/Hummer/Yukon fad, since 90% of those vehicles never use more than 10% of their capabilities.

How much of the cost of gallon of petrol in Europe goes to tax?

One thing I've realized from arguing about this global economy is that prices of items like barrels of oil are pretty much the same world wide. If I am correct, the oil companies can sell a liter of gasoline in Germany for the same price the can sell one in the US. The rest of that $3.50 must be taxes. I don't really want to pay any more taxes.

enigma

I'm not sure how much European governments tax the gas, after taxing the crap out of people's paychecks for socialized medicine, welfare, etc. Maybe some of the cost is more expensive real estate, stricter environmental laws, tougher distribution, and the fact that all of the oil is imported.

Most of the profit probably comes from selling for what the market will bear. I've noticed that BP is opening more and more gas stations in the US, which they wouldn't be doing if they had to sell at $3/gal to make money.

Maybe do that walmart thing where you get .03 off a gallon if you use a gift card.

Did anybody ever use that priceline.com gas like 3 or 4 years ago?

Wankel

OPEC is making significant cuts in oil production which is causing an increase in prices...and it will only get worse in the coming months.

Public transportation over there makes more sense because their cities are much more compact - you can walk over most of it or at the least take a subway. In addition there is a good rail system because the countries are so small.

In America, most cities are spread out so you need personal transportation. In addition, there is a large rural population in the states that has to have automobiles to conduct business, travel to school, etc. Our country is so big that even high speed rail could alleviate only so much - you need air travel.

Who knows, maybe $3 gas will kill the Corvette/Viper/GT-40 fad, since 90% of those vehicles never use more than 10% of their capabilities. Maybe we should be like Europe and drive nothing but 2 cylinder Yugos......... Uhhhh, never mind, I'm keeping my Yukon until I can afford a Chevy SSR.

WTF are you complaining about? Bush just gave you a tax cut, so now you can buy even more gas...ohh price went up, daemn....

What makes me mad is the price of gas at Sam's or Costco. They are discounters and the price of gas at their outlets is only .01 to .02/gal. below the Hess's, RaceTrack, etc. Talking with the manager of Costco about this, he says Costco is just making a small profit. I think he is nuts because the others could not survive on smokes and beer alone. The gas/gal. at Costco use to be between .05 and .10/gal. lower only two years ago. What happened?

I think it was clear what I was complaining about..

Bush didn't give me any tax cuts..

Do you pay taxes now? I mean, do you get a refund for the entire amount that the gov confiscated in taxes? If the answer is no, then you got a tax cut.

Ok... So IF I didn't get everything back, how is that a tax cut? The gov kept more of the money I earned last year, and you're telling me that's a tax cut??

As the petroleum companies pay more for oil, thanks to the OPEC production reductions, we will pay more for gas. Last week, a station in lower Manhattan was charging 1.88 for regular, and it was 1.59 in Jersey City, on the other side of the Holland Tunnel. The increase in fuel prices does not represent a windfall for gas producers.

I got a tax cut last year, but as a lowly FO I wasn't making enough to begin with to have a teriffic impact on the economy. The impact instead came from those who had the ability to buy a jet and put it on leaseback. THOSE are the people who stimulate the economy by getting a tax cut. They are the people who own companies, and decide to hire more employees as their businesses grow. Raising their taxes, a la John Kerry, will completly squash this economic recovery.

So Cal prices

Every time I go out there I am amazed at the difference in prices between the LAX areas and Riverside. Some times 10 cents per gallon in some cases. Seems to me that the fuel should not cost 50 cents a gallon more than Fl or Tex (paid 156 in Tex yesterday). Tex has a 49 cents tax to boot. So what do you suppose gives with California. People will simply pay the money for the fuel. Pure and simple profits. California has had high prices for several years. I was paying 128 in ATL while Lake Forrest residents were paying 176 over 2 years ago. I am surprised that no one has publicaly broken down the cost structure on fuel. I wonder what the price of a gallon of gas is in Mexico?

Consider the different levels at which the states tax gas.

Georgia has a 7.5 cents per gallon tax while Wisconsin taxes it at 31.1 cents. The major cause of price differences at the opposite end of the Holland Tunnel is the 29.65 rate charged by NY versus the 14.5 rate charged in NJ. And on top of all these is the 18.4 cents per gallon federal gas tax.

Historically, the feds collect more per year in these taxes than they appropriate for highway construction so the Highway Trust Fund enhances surpluses/hides more severe deficits in the annual budgets like with the Airport Trust Fund and Social Sucurity do.

Too many changes.

It amazes me how fast it goes up...but how slow it comes down. I've seen a + .20 change in one afternoon....but i've never seen more than a - .05 change going down at one time. If it goes from 1.39 to 1.59 overnight...when it goes back down..it takes weeks to get back to 1.39.

$1.59-1.65 here in the "Land O Lincoln".....and thats with
corn-o-hol in it!
