GAC lands long at JFK

Must be a slow news day when a nobody hurt/no damage (they said) MD-11 from Gemini (sp?) lands alittle long at JFK and it makes the "top story" news in Syracuse.

Anyway just thought I'd pass it along. Anyone know if it was mechanical or something else. The news showed the nosewheel into that soft runway overrun stuff. It looks like it ate up about half the length of the overrun stopping material.

Other top "story news" in SYR was how to buy health insurance for your pet, these people have nothing better to do whn the weather is good up here.

D'OH! I hate it when that happens!

It has been said that there was no damage to the aircraft (aside from what the overrun material might cause). There was also no reported mechanical problems with the aircraft.

Until an investigation is completed, I can't (well, I CAN, but shouldn't) speculate as to the cause. I'm sure we'll all have our "educated guesses" as to the probable cause.

I guess it's time for the mighty DC-10 (and her crews) to come to the MD-11 rescue and pick up the slack (again).

Cargo Plane Overruns Runway at JFK

NEW YORK (AP) - A cargo plane overran a runway early Friday while arriving at John F. Kennedy International Airport, but no one was hurt, authorities said.

There were three crew members aboard the plane, said Pasquale DiFulco, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the airport. There may be some damage to the plane, a MD-11 operated by Gemini Air Cargo, he said.

Landing around 4:30 a.m., the plane came to a stop in an area off the end of the runway called an ``arrestor bed,'' DiFulco said. The bed has a surface that acts as a cushion to stop planes safely when they overshoot the runway, he said.

The airport did not close, though traffic stopped briefly, he said.

The flight originated in Brussels, Belgium. Thomas A. Corcoran, the chief executive of Gemini Air Cargo, said by telephone from the company's Dulles, Va., headquarters that on approach and landing, ``everything was normal.''

He said the company was working with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board to determine what happened.

Four years ago, the arrestor bed technology also safely stopped an American Eagle commuter plane that overran a runway at the airport.
