I'm just curious about how much other instructors make per hour for both primary and advanced students? Also where you teach and whether its a 61 or 141 school? I was thinking about it the other day so I thought I would ask. I make $16 for primary $17 for advanced and pilot service and $11 for ground school.

$12 an hour, both for flight and ground instruction (primary through advanced) in the sunshine state. Mostly 141, but occasionally some 61 students too.
 
$25/Hr - Primary/Advanced/Ground

Club instructor, Part time.

I make about $6,000 - $7,000 per year. Not much, but it's nice to be paid for one's avocation, & it helps pay for one boy's college.

Pay

1993 information. Mesa paid me $15/contact hour. I also taught commercial ground at San Juan CC. I don't remember how much it paid me.

My last job was with Arnautical Training Center in Denver. Starting pay was $18K with no benies. I was to be upped to either $24K or $26K before it graciously showed me the door.

In 1992, FSI salaried me at $21K + incentives. Also, decent benies, including health and 401-K. I was told that I would be paid higher when I was hired. :mad:

I started at ERAU in 1988 making $13.16 per contact hour and left making $15.50. I also was salaried at $25K while I was a stage check pilot. That was really good money in those days - comparable to a commuter captain's pay.

$30 for primary, $35 for everything else. That is from the time I say hi to the time I have signed the logbook. I am just finishing my first year, and I will make about 30k. This is at flying club, and all of it is PT 61.
 
Its Both. Im a Contract Instructor, and the school takes nothing from us, so all goes to me.

Sim Instructing

It is a sad state when Sim Instructors command much more than $12-25 per hour, albiet they are instructing in airline equipment.

The system we have in this country is a disgrace. We put young kids in real airplanes teaching people with no aviation experiance and pay them those wages. I have paid $80 an hour for a @#$%^& ski lesson!
 
Most instructors average between $18 to $25 per hour.

I do know an instructor - and he IS an exception, he makes $80K per yer and charges a great deal more for his time and experience. There IS a market out there that is williing to pay for time and experience.

I charge $30/hr for ground or flight in central Ohio. It's an independant contractor sort of deal, so we keep it all. The flight school I work with is talking about charging us CFI contractors $9/hr for every hour we instruct in their aircraft. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about my gig, but am wondering if any of you other independants out there have to put up with a similar deal?

Crest

Are you out of Crest? Must be crazy soloing guys there.

Speaking as someone who soloed at Crest last summer (and got my private this fall, and am working on my IR there now), learning to fly out of Crest has helped me be better pilot. Serious fear of smacking into a 150' Douglas Fir does wonderful things for your concentration. If you want a real challenge, practice your night landings at Crest, when the trees are invisible.

I make $10 an hour for ground/primary/advanced instruction. The pay where I am at is not good for instructors because of the over supply of them.

You are not stealing from the school IF that person who furnishes the aircraft approaches you FIRST and asks you if you are able to make some kind of "different" arrangements to better accomodate there work schedule. If that person works till late at night, your flight school is closed, can't get a dispatch, then the only thing that you are really doing is working on your "off" time to help someone out who wouldn't be able to fly any other way during the school's "regular" business hours. This is a pretty common practice to do and there are many cfi's who do this and the school is aware of it. Working for a flight school does NOT mean that they own you and that you MUST instruct there at ALL times without any exceptions. 99% of the students and pilots that seek instruction at this particular flight school do not own there own aircraft anyways so the school is still making plenty of money.

Now on the other hand > I would not suggest approaching a pilot who owns there own plane and telling them "it would be much cheaper to fly with me IF we didn't go through the school" "I won't say anything if you don't" " Keep this between you and me""we can work a deal out">>...Catch the drift??!! Now in my opinion this would be obviously taking business away from the school and shouldn't be tolerated.

There are a few situations that are not the exception, really depends on the circumstances pertaining to the situation.

It would be ludicrous to believe however that just because you instruct for a certain flight school then you should feel like you are "OWNED" by them and "forbidden" to instruct or do anything else along those lines anywhere but that particular flight school.

What it really comes down to is proper and good business ethics, good judgement, and most importantly good professionalism excercised by the CFI.

CFI pay

$20.00 per hour for primary, $25.00 anything over that, $30.00 in customer's a/c. Independent instructor, but school keeps $10.00/hr of fee. Same fee for ground and flight instruction.
