I am planning a cross country flight that is going to put me through CVG's airspace. I am going to land at the Blue Ash airport wich is about 20 miles NE of CVG. Anyone ever had them deny you entry through the Bravo Space? I am planning on cruising at 7,000 feet so hopefully being that high will help me.

Any general advice on trying to fly through(or around) a Bravo airspace on a VFR flight plan?

You could go underneath the class B shelf. But if you're going to go at 7,000 I'd pick 7,500 (eastbound) or 6,500 (westbound).;)

Hhehe yeah +500  So they dont get all ticked acting if you fly underneat the shelf?

Probably won't even know you're there (except for the Mode C return) if you don't tell 'em...

Under is probably your best bet if you want to talk to them.

I've never had any problems. Flown in Hamilton, Blue Ash, Lunken, CVG, Clermont Co, all while talking to Cincy Approach.

Agreed on the +500 thing...at least until they tell you where they want you.

Where are you departing from?

With your low time, I would definitly recommend talking to Cinci Approach. Make sure to use the words "Student Pilot" before you tail number. It should make every thing slow down.

Good Luck & Have fun,

Let us know how it goes, or if you have any other questions.

This may not be the greatest advice.

If you are a student pilot you need to get ground and flight training and an endorsement in the specific class B airspace (plus you must have a clearance) before you can enter it. I'm guessing that if you would have gotten the instruction you wouldn't be asking about it on Flightinfo. Without that training I suggest you avoid the airspace. If you have already had the training I suggest choosing a VFR altitude and contacting ATC (I would get flight following from the beginning of the flight). If you are in the way ATC will move you where they need you. If you haven't had the training there is no reason not to get it. You don't have to be intimidated by class B airspace, chances are you won't see another airplane unless you happen to go through during one of Delta's arrival banks, and if you do you might get to see a few large airplanes closer than you ordinarily would (in a good way).

Review FAR 61.95 and 91.131 for the requirements to enter class B. Good luck.

I'm confused what exactly you are disagreeing with me on here.

His CFI will have to give him a X/C endorsement to do the flight (or an endorsement to do takeoffs and landings at the destination airport) so his CFI should take care of that.

If your suggesting having him fly under the class B airspace solo without talking to ATC, I would recommend against that. Cinci Looks like it has quite a few little shelves that jut out from the standard rings, all with altitude changes. Plus you’ve got LUK to deal with if your going through on the East edge.

Either way the decision is up to him and his CFI.

I still do that if I screw anything up, I dont know if they believe me or not when I am flying the BBJ.

Must have a Mode C transponder on when operating under the Class B veil.

Must have CFI endorsement to enter Class B airspace.

If not actually operating in Class B airspace, ATC may or may not want to talk to you. If its any kind of busy (and CVG is a ghosttown now compared to its former self), a curt "unable" will be their reply.

My first solo flight into a radar environment was into LUK. I had heard CVG Approach was tough on GA, but I was in the middle of the mid-morning arrival bank and the controller was GREAT to me. Even told me that LUK would be "just behind the big hill with all the antennas on it", helping me find my way.

Where are you coming from and going to, and what kind of aircraft will you be flying? I instructed at LEX for 2+ years, so I'm familiar with the area...
