A friend of mine wants to get his private pilots license and instrument rating in the Dallas area. He lives closest to the Addison Airport but is willing to drive elsewhere for better instruction if necessary.

Just curious if anyone has any recommendations of where to go or not go for flight instruction in the Dallas area.

He was looking into a school called Lonestar flyers at Addison. If anyone can make any recommendations, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

How much does he want to spend? Addison is closest to me as well, but there are certainly cheaper ways to learn. I would encourage him to check out some other alternatives as well:

From what I've seen Monarch air at Addison is a good outfit. To tell ya the truth, that's where I'm probably heading. They've also got a location at McKinney as well. Check them out here.

Good Luck.

Can't say I've been there myself, but I've never heard a bad thing about Skymates. They're finally getting a tower at that airport too, so you won't need to fear for your life in/around the airport.

Marcair in Roanoke is a good outfit, but pretty far from Addison. That's the only school I've actually been to up there.

I've spoken with American Flyers there. Real nice guy I met there (Steve or mike or something. He did their web video). Place felt right, but I went with ATP in Arlington. If American Flyers offers competitive pricing keep them in mind. If your friend wants to fly recreational (not professionally) I wouldn't recommend ATP.

The more time I spend instructing, the more I realize my employer is taking way too big a cut. Can any one send this guy some recommendations on independent CFI's?
