Just wanna see what everybody's hauling these days in the RJ these days. I understand the bin in the RJ is not as big as the other a/c, so if you have a specific model that works well with the RJ and can fit a 1st year FO's salary, that would be super.

The standard Office Depot sample case for less than $30. The RJ accepts most flight cases as far as I know.

As far as the Embraer RJ, I use the Samsonite flight bag that you can get for 65 bucks or so. It is pretty sturdy and fits just right.

I tried the $30 office depot one before and the clasps on top lasted for about one sequence. They didn't stay snapped shut.

I have the $30 case from Office Depot. It's been quite sturdy for the last 8 months. I abuse it everyday hauling freight. The only drawback is that a Jepp binder won't fit sideways into it. I have to put the binder longways (parallel to the long side of the case itself). That's a hassle because my Ops Manual is a full sized notebook binder.

Are the real flight cases wide enough to fit a bunch of Jepp binders? I only use one binder, so it's not big problem yet.

Flight Bags

Unless you are a girl, or in some way physically challenged. DO NOT GET A FLIGHT BAG WITH WHEELS. It looks bad and shows a complete lack of self respect. If you want a bag with wheels use your rollaboard. It's the funniest thing ever to see a rollaboard with a wheeled flightbag hooked to it.
If you want quality Scott bags are the way to go, if you are on a budget I have had my Staples deluxe for over two years.
Thanx, Mung.

Just ask the other pilots. I'm surprised the Basic Indoc class was not given a notice of recommended bags. What rollaboard do you have?

Never seen a "notice of recommendation" for flight bags before. Where in the h*11 do you work?

The Staples or Office Depot $30 special works great. I've had mine for 2 1/2 years, and won't replace it until it breaks. The puppy holds 2 full Jepp binders, a POH Jepp size binder, an FOM Jepp size binder, sunglass case, small headset, chart case, etc. I've had a full size headset in there before, but also only had 1 Jepp binder at the time. You just gotta know how to pack it. Be carefull of the bottom....it's only pressed cardboard, so don't get it too wet.

Long Time Gone:

I should have stated the bags are available through the company store at reduced rates from street rates. My humble apologies, Sir!

I couldn't agree more. The thing is just going to get beat up, kicked around, dropped, spilled on, torn, ripped, bashed and damaged. The fit in the little flight case slot is very tight anyway and that's where mine has gotten most of it's abuse from anyway.

best bag for the buxx, i have had one for 4 years, it will go another 4 easy, 69 buxx, samsonite, handle will never fall off, fits perfect in crj bin, 3 full 2 inch jepp binders plus day book, plus david clark headset, plus 2 d cell maglight, after all that you still have the top 3 inches of the bag empty on top of all that, dont drag on the ground behind your overnight bag or the bottom will fall out, way nicer and sturdier than the officemax/depot 30 dollar bag, crewgear has it for the best price,

enjoy!

Funny, that Samsonite bag used to be $40 at Office Max before Samsonite put it's name on it. Anyway, I thought Crew Gear went out of business a couple of years back.

The Scott Bags are awesome--- but you pay for them---They last forever.

If you want to order one find some one with an ALPA number to order it for you... there is a pretty significant discount if you do that.

P.S. The wide (8 inch ?) bag fits fine on the bag slot on the ERJ.

If you get the fake leather $30 flight case from Office Depot, the handle will break within 6 months. OfficeMax has a US Luggage bag made out of material similar to your rollerbag. It is around $40 and will last longer. It fits in the CRJ bin, but is not very tall. You will not be able to fit your plates, books and a DC headset in there.

I say cough up the cash and get the Scott Leather bag. You'll be glad you did; at least after the credit card is paid off. They look great, have tons of room inside, and are built like a tank. Full grain, saddle grade 1-piece leather. I get a lot of compliments on mine from the cheap a$$ pilots that buy the $30 wonders from Office Depot.

Mine has a thin pouch attached to the inside lid that holds my headset and sunglasses. I can fit two 3" and a 1" Jepp binder, 2 3" FOM/POM's, and my laptop in it all at the same time. It's a tight fit and heavy, but it beats dragging around an extra laptop case through security. I don't fly the CRJ, but I have seen CRJ pilots with these so I'm guessing it will fit in the bin.

What ever you decide to get, if it's actual leather, keep it looking nice by putting some shoe polish on it (where you don't have stickers) once in a while. Especially on the edges and bottom where it rubs every time you set it down and any place it gets scratched. Supposedly you can get 20+ years out of these Scott Leather bags doing that. You'll look like a new hire the whole time but who cares?

Just my $.02

This thread has just made me aware of another benefit of being a cargo pilot. You don't have to worry about how your flight bag looks or where you will put your sunglasses :)

I used the staples special with wheels as a floater pilot for over a year. I have trudged it through every type of weather imaginable to and from my baron on the ramp. Since we travel the airlines alot to get to new assignments, we check our rollerbags, and drag our flight cases on the plane with us. Therefore the wheels make it nice. Not to mention we carry just about the entire US of NOS plates. Considering we are travelling half asleep and in our jeans and sweatshirts, how we look doesn't matter to us. I always planeside checked my flight case on the RJs since it would not fit in the overheads. Besides a few scrapes, it did the job.
