I have a few questions on the multi rating.

I am getting my multi comm. inst. on the 30th of this month. Does anybody have any tips or pointers on the flight or oral to make it go any smoother? I do have the ASA oral exam guide.

Also, besides getting your MEI, is there any other popular ways to build multi time?

Popular with the well healed crowd, is buying a twin and flying it around for a spell.

You and I are in the same boat man! What I plan on doing down here is getting my MEI this coming summer and looking to fly charter both with my school here and with another flight school. Most insurance companies would rather you be a MEI than a Comm. Multi if you were planning on buying a twin anyway....and im thinking youre in youre younger years, yeah, Insurance companies dont like young people either!

They don't like 40something y/o men either. My first year's insurance premium was $15k.


Advice:

Don't do legs at the gym for several days prior. You don't want to be sore before.

(you think I'm kidding)

You want fresh legs...I stood on one rudder, or another the entire time.

The only time my examiner let me use any rudder trim was on the instrument approach.

As far as the oral, he asked me maybe 2 questions...the most important one being which engine was critical on my 340.....that was it.
 
why do you want multi time that quick? when i got my MEI i racked up close to 120 hours of ME time within the first 4 months. i understand that seniority is everything when it comes to the 121 world but dont forgett that theres a whole lot of professional flying outside the airlines

Well, then you don't need a multi engine plane, you need an herbalist or acupuncturist...then you'll be on your way to being not un-well.

I don't know what to tell people today about multi time-building, rentals by us are going upward 280.00 an hour for a Seneca.

We bought a beater twin Cessna, but it was kind of a horror show keeping it running with a couple of crooks for partners. Our insurance was around 2,000 bucks a year, but our annuals were killing us.
 
Tips for checkride oral based on my experience: still know your stuff from good'old private, special VFR, special VFR at night in D and/or C airspace, cloud clearance, airspace and so on.

Reason for critical engine: P-Factor only. They dont really want to hear about those other possible factors.

Know all the MEL-stuff, flow-checklist to determine if airplane is airworthy, all V-speeds, what you can do as commercial pilot, medical classes, difference between category and class with respect to airmen and certification of aircrafts, props & governor, what manifold pressure is, definition of Vx/Vy and how they converge to create absolute ceiling, definition of service ceiliing for single and multi airplanes, wether it is true airspeed or indicated airspeed being used in the lift formula (in other words: what changes with altitude),

and of course, I was asked about weather: flow patterns around high and low pressure, general flow patterns across the united states, graphical weather products, content of all text-based like Airmet, Convective Sigmet and Sigmet (memorize all info they may contain and valid hours etc).

...thats about it.
 
If you want MEL time it is out there. Once you have your Comm, MEL, Inst there are MEL SIC turbo prop jobs out there in the on-demand business. Not much pay, zero QOL, old Shorts 330/360's, BE-99, etc. but it is a start and it is MEL turbine time. I know many of these companies are having trouble filling those seats.
 
thanks for all the replies, I am younger as one of you guessed, I will be a sophmore in college this fall. I am not trying to build multi time fast, I still have 3 years of school. I was just inquiring about other ways to get that time.
