The last four of your SSAN, higher is better. Awarded to the entire class, usually on the first day of class. Good news... a few weeks later you may have 16 more behind you! Latest rumors are 16X2 classes per month.

Welcome aboard!

No big deal, but it seems to me that using birthdate would be a better way to establish seniority and more reasonable when you consider that the older guy is going to retire sooner.

Age might be a better way but the SSN system is how they do it here at FedEx and I have no reason to believe it will ever change.

Mach 80,

Descriminating against younger newhires is the result. Going by SSN has a higher probability of distributing young vs. older newhires to the "top of the class" for seniority sake. Out of an average class size of 12 or say 16, there's not much difference anyway.

Also, at FedEx you can't count on an older newhire to retire earlier. We recently had one of the oldest FE's in the industry retire - at age 78 I believe, Will Holt - flew fighters in WWII!! There are also a lot of retire military guys who go to the back of the DC-10 and 727 to bridge the gap to age 65....You should see some of the "fossil" over age 60 FE's stumbling around the AOC at night, geez,,,,,,

Personally I was one of the younger folks in my class of 10 and was #6 out of 10......

Not that my opinion matters much, but I agree with Mach 80 that your seniority number in class for all airlines should be assigned oldest to youngest. After all, isn't that a definition of seniority right there (simply your age)?

Age

I agree that age sounds like a more reasonable way to determine seniority, but that is just an opinion. I think Sandman makes a reasonable explanation of why a random number generator (the last 4 of the SSN) is more objective, but the bottom line is the way FedEx DOES it is by the last 4 of the SSN. I wouldn't worry too much about the seniority within a class, its kind of like a bunch or hookers sitting around debating their virtue.

I was lucky with my last 4, I gained a couple of numbers from what I would have been if they used age, but either way I was just happy to be there (and we were stuck at the bottom for the entire year and a half hiring freeze). During newhire training you do have to go on bathroom breaks in seniority order, so if you have a small bladder it might be important to be up near the top.

Ok, that last part was a joke. Seriously though, you do pick your training partner and sim locale based on seniority within the class which is cool. Otherwise, with hiring continuing on pace like it is now, seniority within the class isn't much of a factor. That being said, of course I'd rather be at the top than the bottom, every little number helps.

Good luck in class and hurry up and hit the line before Christmas please!

Duuuuudes,

Age or SSN...who cares ? You are talking the difference of 10 - 30 numbers max. May determine what seat you get out of indoc but if you are at SWA, guess what, you are going to a 737. FEDEX, I would guess you are going to sit sideways. Over the course of years and a career, it just doesn't matter...except for those that wear their seniority like it was rank.

FWIW, at Mama D it use to be done by age then switched to SSN with C2K. Why ?? I heard it was supposed to be more "fair" / random to use SSN. Guess the young punks were complaining.
