Great! I'll probably get a call in 2034. Just in time to retire.

I got a call for 2-3 Feb. I'm in the pool for SWA. I know I am lucky and blessed, but I've been agonizing on whether to go to the interview. If I do and get an offer, which one do I take? I know I'm not going to get sympathy from anyone, but it's an interesting dilemna. I don't think I can go wrong at either company, I just have to decide which one is a better fit.

Good luck,

Givvit

Givvit,
Absolutely go to the interview! The time and money spent to prepare and go to the interview pale in comparison to the possibility of having two fabulous options. You'd be foolish not to try to maximize your opportunities IMHO. Interviewing at one company while in the pool at another is hardly disloyal in any way since you've yet to start working there. Even if you had started already, you ought to be doing what you perceive to be best for your family and career. As to which is the better option, you're exactly right to suggest it's a very personal weighing of pros and (very few) cons. I recently had the same choice and stayed at FedEx with no doubts about my decision whatsoever. There have been some excellent threads comparing the relative merits of the two companies. Research those, mull it over, and keep your options open! Congrats!:)

I've been searching for these. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

You don't really need to make a decision until you get your second class date. You can be in both pools at the same time, and you can be working for one and in the pool of the other at the same time. Take the first offer you get. It's only a problem trying to work for both at the same time. If you get to that point, you'll have more information to make a more intelligent decision.

If and when THAT time comes, make the decision that works for YOU, and then don't look back.

(By the way, if FedEx gets the notion that FedEx is your second choice, and you'll be bolting as soon as SWA calls, I have a feeling you won't be blessed with the choice of SWA or FDX. That would be considered a "risk" to FedEx, and they're only interested in "NO RISK" pilots. I don't have a clue that the subject will be discussed, but I, personally, would give some thought as to how to handle that subject if it comes up.)

Congratulations, and good luck!

Hey fellers, about how long after your sponsor walked you through did you receive the call for an interview?

Roger that. I went to bat for a buddy in Sept '04 and he got the call in late Nov. He passed on the first available interview date because it was for a week later and he wanted to make sure he was throughly prepared.

The next date was for Jan 11-12...now he is just wanting for the call. If hired, HR predicted a Mar-Apr class date.

Nothing against you, PurpleTail, but I can't believe that a guy with inside support in September would not be prepared to interview by November, or why a week's notice was insufficient. There's NO excuse for not being thoroughly prepared to interview. Clearly he does not understand the importance of seniority.

At the rate we're hiring now, his deferral could result in a loss of 48 numbers; if rumors of a huge class in February pan out, that number could double. That is, if he even gets another call.

If you've got an application in, and especially if you have had your resume walked-in to an ACP or the SCP, be ready to interview tomorrow, if not earlier.

flew with a flex guy this week. they are bringing in 60 in march, then 36 a month after that for the next couple of years...

...I'd just throw in my 2 cents.

Your last statement is critical in determining which company is the right one. It has to be what fits you best.

I was faced with this exact scenario 3 1/2 years ago. I had been gearing up to get hired with SWA, but had shotgunned out apps to most of the majors, including UPS and FedEx. However, FedEx called first for the interview, followed by SWA. I ended up doing both interviews within a couple of days of each other in June.

From the time both companies called I started wondering which one I should pick if the situation came up. I talked to people in both companies, as well as people within the industry (I knew a few former cargo guys). I trolled the message boards as well for additional information. I didn't seriously worry about it until both offered me a training date.

For me, my logic in picking FedEx vs SWA was based on 2 major factors, ease of commute (and scheduling related to such) and stability. FedEx seems to have easier scheduling options for commuters, such as longer trips, deviation procedures, etc. Stability is a relative thing in this industry, but my feeling is that freight is always going to be there.

Best way to know how ya did? Look back in 20 to 25 years...then you'll know. There are a lot of variables that could REALLY change the industry (cabotage, automated aircraft, fuel costs, health care, pensions)...and that doesn't include a "singularity" type event (something happens is SO radical that predicting the ramifications becomes impossible).

Good luck in whatever you decide. I think either company is a great choice.
