Don't forget about the part where you gotta pay the feds about 55 bucks and..... Well, actually that's about it..

FCC... Gotta love it!

And its still not laminated!

RESTRICTED OPERATOR PERMIT: At least one person on each aircraft flying or communicating internationally must have a restricted radiotelephone operator permit. This requirement is in addition to the requirement to have an aircraft radio station license for the aircraft. No restricted radiotelephone operator permit is required to operate VHF radio equipment on board an aircraft when that aircraft is flown domestically. You may obtain a restricted permit using FCC Form 605. No test is required to obtain this permit. The FCC will mail the permit to you, and it will be valid for your lifetime. The fee for a restricted permit is in addition to any fee paid for an aircraft license. The permit fee is $55.
You may operate your aircraft radio after you have submitted your application(s) to the FCC so long as you fill out, detach, and retain the temporary operating authority attached to the application form. The temporary operating authority is valid for 90 days after you submit your application to the FCC and should be kept with your station records until you receive your license/permit through the mail.

Hope this helps ya out. It can get complicated because the site has 75 diferent radio licenses...but just do what the above states and you can do it all on-line in about 15 minutes.

Its unclear...

Thanks for the info. I went to the FCC site and got all registered and signed on, but it is unclear to me which of "Services" gets me to the application for the Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit. Do you know which "Service" to apply under?

Question to add to this. I will be flying about 150 mi out in the gulf this coming week, so i will be crossing the adiz border. I will not be landing anywhere, just doing a survey for looking for seaweed. I will be communicating with a boat over the radio, do i need a permit, and/or does the airplane need a permit?

This flight should be fun, flying over water is a friggin old cessna 172........ At least i get paid.

I just ordered one last week. You want RR from their long list of services. If you can't figure it out, do a search on flightinfo and there's a thread with a 800 telephone number, that's how I figured it out. I think she said it takes 7-10 days till it comes in the mail.

Just register first, then make sure you get your FRN number! Its written in small letters on top of the form after you register, and unless you take note of it you have a problem with proceeding to login! (I messed up and registered twice, and hope the feds wont kick in my door for it :D) Then select Radio Services on the upper left menu (from the address supplied in the beginning of this thread), scroll down to PR/Commercial/Restricted License and proceed from there. It was a bit tricky to find...
