For some companies, I have seen listed a requirement to have an FCC Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit. I have found what I think is the right place to apply for this on-line, but it's about as easy to follow as Dennis Miller. (Go ahead and bring on the intelligence-based remarks.)

Anyway, is it really expected to show up to an interview with one of these? Any gouge on the best way to do it?

You probably did find the right place, and you're right, the on-line form takes some time to make sure you're doing the right thing. You have to get one of those FRN things and then you can apply, then you need to fill something out so you can pay them. It's nowhere near as easy as it should be. One cool thing is that you can actually save what you've filled in without transmitting the form and come back to it later. My advice is to go slow and read absolutely everything, that's what I did. Then if you have any questions there's an 800 number to call and they can help you. I called them to make sure I did the payment correctly before I sent it. Good luck with that thing, I'm glad I don't have to do that again. Definitely have it for interviews by the way.

Make sure the 2 letter code for the license you are seeking is RR and not AC. I made the mistake of requesting an AC and was sent an actual aircraft radio station permit. It should be an RR for Restricted Radiotelephone Operators License. The fee should be around $55.

Useful?

I got my permit in 1983. With the exception of showing it at the one interview I did, I can think of ..........well, I cant think of ONE time I've needed it! Scam is not the word. I think it was 35 dollars back then.

Remember when the form was one page long? All you did was just rip off the bottom and that became your temporary? Typical example of the government trying to make a system more efficient but the changes end up having a completely opposite effect.

I had to show it at my interview. They didn't specifically ask for it. However, it was listed as a requirement and I had to provide a photocopy of all of my certificates and licencses to them both before and at my interview. When I got mine, it was back when they sent you a form and you sent them a check.
