I keep seeing having an FCC radio permit being a requirement for some pilot positions. Why is this, and is this the same permit/license that HAM radio users have?

Simple to get $50.00 & No Test Fcc.gov. Becuse some places fly outside the USA.

There are numerous FCC licenses; the one you want is the Restricted Radio-telephone Operator. If you're going to be a commercial pilot, you'll need it to get an airline job (only the captain needs one, but they make you get prior to being hired).

The specific permit is called the "Restricted Radiotelephone operator permit"

Like NW pilot said, there's only an application to fill out and a fee. the license for ham operators or commercial broadcast is a differnet animal. It requires a test and has more priveliges

Fcc

To fly (land) outside US, the pilot needs an FCC Radiotelephone operator's permit (RR) and the aircraft needs a Radio Station License (AC). I've never been checked flying part 91 to Canada on those documents, it seems customs only cares about "getting theirs." I've only flown 182's and Barons inter-country though.

Does anyone have a direct link on the FCC site where I can get an aircraft radio license for my plane? We all know you must have it for the airplane to fly outside the US, but I'll be dipped where the heck you get it.?
thanks.

You will also need a CORES registration and to obtain an FRN before applying. The whole app can now be done online with online payment

The simple truth is the FCC license isn't worth the paper it's pinted on. It may have had relavence in the "old" days but now it's just a joke. It would be nice if ICAO could punt this thing into the crapper where it belongs.
