Hey guys. Ive been trying at getting a competitive package together for a LONG time now (many years). I just curious if there is anyway I can find out if my 20/20 eyes will bomb the FC1 for one of those weird word errors. Or do you just have to actually get there before I find out Im no good because of my ebraermyopicrefractulatingstysis. Thanks

Don't sweat it. If you have 20/20, you shouldn't have any problems. The only thing that gets some people with good vision is the depth perception test. You have to look inside one of those eye machines and you see several rows of O-rings. They ask you to look at the first line and tell them which one "stands out." I failed this test the first time around and barely passed the second time. I had a difficult time with it because the vision in my right eye is worse than the vision in my left, which made it more harder. I found out later that if you have glasses that you should wear them for it. I didn't have them at the time, but on that same day, my eye exam required me to.

You should be ok, but if you fail anything, make sure you ask to do the test again either that day or the next. Just relax and get a good nights sleep before the physical.

Is the FC1 one of those physical that if you are overall a healthy, fit person, etc., you should be able to pass. I hear horror stories about this physical of people being DQ'd for various things I would have never even thought of.

My eyes are not perfect as far a seing distance - 20/30, but my near vision is 20/15. What various eye tests do they perform, and as long as your vision is within the 20/70 limits, should you be O.K. for these tests?

Dude, get off the fence. Why have you been sitting on your package (so to speak) for so long.

It's not rocket science getting into the military, and you don't have to be a superman. Just give it your best effort, but you need to get started.

Don't let one small issue stop you. It's like the lotto, can't win if you don't enter.

20/20 doesn't mean automatic pass. I have 20/15 and I DQd. There are a few things that can be out of limits, vision-wise. Excessive refractive error is a BIG disqualifier, although most people who have refractive error can't focus 20/20 anyway.

In my case, I can still focus, but someday will need glasses. If you're worried, go to an Opthamologist and get a comprehensive eye exam and then have an AF medic look at the results. Some, units will give you a FC1 just for saying that you're interested in applying, so you know before the interview.

PRK and now even LASIK are allowed for new AF pilots. Check with an AF medic for the latest. Most people don't know what the real options are.

Good luck, and odds are your 20/20 will be good enough for that part of the FC1.

Color blindness?

I was talking with a buddy of mine going through the selection process and he heard that they were getting a little more lax on color def. in canidates? Anyone know if its true or not? I know when I went through that was a 100% bust.

I haven't heard anything about that. As far as I know, the AF is getting even more serious about passing the color blindness test. Too bad they won't do demonstrated ability like the FAA does.

The medical forum at baseops.net is the best place to go for the latest on medical Q&A. That BB has a team of actual medics and military docs that moderate their respective specialties. Great place to get an answer from someone who has the latest regulations and memos right in front of them.
