I know Virgin America is hiring to cover the new rest rules. Why haven't I heard of any other carriers doing the same thing? Does everyone think they will be able to cover the new inefficiencies with the numbers they have? I guess a more broad question is are other companies communicating to their pilot groups about the coming changes?

Union pilot contracts beat or exceed most of the new rules.

JB is hiring 20 or so a month to cover growth, attrition, and 117. Wouldn't be surprised to see this number double when the big 3 actually start there serious hiring. Assuming that ever happens.

It could be we are hiring because 117 won't allow us to run so lean.

When these new rules were first mentioned, a CAL poster said they would need 15%??? more pilots to comply with these rules...don't remember the exact number, but mgmt had one in mind.

I doubt you'll see the 117 rules remain for more than a week in their present form once the industry sees how unworkable they will be in practice.

Delaying a flight because of a phone call? What about the CA who is a commuter trying to get back to catch his flight home, but the FO can't get to sleep because of construction and delays the flight? Guys will be at each other's throats. The number of flights returning to the gate due to relatively minor mechanicals and then cancelling due to projected flight time exceedances will make schedules massively unreliable.

We should have fixed the fatigue issue with something that worked case-by-case and protected the individual pilot rather than slapping together something that causes more problems than it fixes.
