I overheard someone in the FBO the other day that they failed their private written.. question.. what impact does this have... on the CFI? on the student?

I know the student has to retake the exam and pay the bucks for it, but will it affect someone's checkride.. maybe a more indepth oral? Any other implications?

And for the CFI, does this have any impact on their pass/fail ratio.. i.e. do writtens count?

It doesn't affect the CFI, only if they bust the checkride.

I can't imagine it affecting the applicant during the checkride(oral). The only record the examiner will see is the one with thepassing score on it...Whether it says it is a re-take or not, I don'tknow, but you can re-take after a pass too so I don't think that wouldhave anything to do with it.

Just an opinionated guess though...

All of the writtens I've taken has a column indicating the times that you have taken the test and if you passed. If I were an examiner I would question the applicant much harder who had taken an exam 5 times before he passed. Wouldn't you?

It should have little or no impact during the oral portion of the checkride. Should have no impact on the CFI, only if the flight portion if busted and the 8710 is submitted to the FAA with the CFI's signature on it.

that's kinda what i figured.. just didn't know what (if any) consequences there were for the CFI.. thanks.

Some will some will not. This largely depends upon the DPE or FAA inspector's personal preferences, they are allowed some leverage per the PTS as well as the guidelines that are set forth in their handbook. I was too cheap to pay a DE so I always went to the fsdo for the rides with the exception of one. Free? Yes, but a lot different than what it would be if I felt like donating $200.00 + per checkride. Best advice is to be familiar with your area(s) where you had the most trouble with on the writtens, that is all fair game whether or not you will be drilled on the material or not. Bottom line is a pass is a pass and a fail is a fail, regardless if you obtained a 85% or a 100%, you still passed .

from what I've been told the examiner will ask some questions on the areas that you were weak on.....

The CFI is also suppose to do this on all missed subject areas. The CFI will place a logbook endorsement to this effect and is required for the practical test.

Nice call Props. You beat me to it. I will say that every DPE I've known will make the oral much more difficult if you don't have a good score on the written, regardless of the sign-off. If I was the DPE, I'd do the exact same thing.
