If a FAA written expires does the student have to be signed off by a CFI or get an endorsement from a coaching center/program to retake or can he just retake the exam.
 
Bring your expired Airmen Knowledge Test Report, according to this:

Should you require a duplicate Airman Knowledge Test Report due to loss or
destruction of the original, send a signed request accompanied by a check or money
order for $1.00, payable to the FAA. Send the request to:
