FAA approves iPad for flight

A post said UAL/CAL will be getting them as EFBs and no more paper jepps.

EDIT: With the announcement of the iPad 2 I wonder if the FAA is going to pose an issue with the new model.

Good way for apple to clear out inventory of the old iPads
 
I've heard the operating temps on the iPad initially was going to limit their use. Anyone hear this too?

iPad;
Operating temperature: 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C)
Nonoperating temperature: -4° to 113° F (-20° to 45° C)

Heard from one of the guys involved in the testing program that temperature was not an issue because when the pad reached the 95 degree point it went into standby mode to protect itself and was usually back up working in less than 2 minutes. The only way they could get them to overheat was by placing them on the glareshield....but a glareshield is not a storage rack, is it.

He said that all the other approved EFBs also had a maximum operating temperature of 95 degrees (plus or minus 1 or 2). The big difference was when those units exceeded the temperature they would continue to operate until they completely failed due to temperature. When they failed, they really failed and probably would never start up again. Their main concern was the low temperature range where pilots would leave the iPads in the aircraft overnight during sub-freezing conditions. I think their solution was for the crew to take the iPad with them when leaving the airplane. Since each pilot was issued their own iPad that's probably not a problem.
 
95° F Easily reached in July with a deferred APU in a CRJ.
 
He did say crj200. Been on one without an APU in the summer?


Wait, so it's not okay to take a 200 over 95 degrees, but it's okay to take a Saab? Is that what you are saying? Have you been in a Saab in MSP even with the "air" hooked up?

Nope not ok. Sack up and not be a "regional" "lets kill our pax" type.

I have NO idea what a saab is like. The E120 sucked in the summer. Do I think this is something that pax should pay for? NOPE. The 200 has ZERO airflow with no APU. I don't mean a little... ZERO! With 50 96.7 deg heaters back there it is horrible.

Geesh, are they sick? Normal temp would be 98.6. Maybe you were going to RST.
 
You shouldn't be taking the airplane in that situation anyway.

Actually we are prohibited from boarding paxs if the temp is above 85 in the cabin, but the cockpit is always warmer than the cabin, add in a little direct sun light on the device you could exceed the limits.
