Looking for opinions on using the engine covers, especially doing the balancing act to get the center cover on. Are they necessary,Do you use them and when????

Thanks
RN

using them is only advised when you need a few moths off on disablity for the injury that is likely to happen.

900 engine covers

We used ours when the weather (high wind, ice possibilty etc..) was an issue; and of course on over nights. If it was really bad we just got a hanger.

Most of the time we would only put in 1 & 3 covers along with the other covers ie stall, pitot, and static ports.

We have the Mary Poppin's Jetbrellas for the outboards and the regular pop-in for the center. They are used as a last resort when the weather is crappy and no hangar is available. It is a two man operation to say the least...we do have a painted on friction material for a walkway on the wing to try and take some of the fear out of the wing walking experience. We always put on the forward covers, pitot, etc.

Only put them on when we can't get a hanger and snow or ice are in the forcast. Very rare.

I watched my CP put the center engine cover on one day.... Then as he was trying to get down, he went face first into the pavement... On another occasion, in high wind conditions at LAS, the FBO called and said the wind blew one lateral and the center engine cover off and it was flapping in the wind beating the hell out of the airplane...(we have the hard plug covers) All this being said. The moral of the story is..... FIND A LARGE TRASHCAN AND TOSS EVERY ENGINE COVER YOU HAVE IN THERE, WALK AWAY AND DON'T LOOK BACK..
