Well I can venture a guess - I know that when you hit mach 1 the bow wave changes the aerodynamic forces on the flight controls - in the -38 you had to honk on it to get it to turn, etc. If you went subsonic while doing that it would rip the jet apart.
I would think the Tomcat would have some sort of assist for >Mach 1 flight - but maybe not - if not -and they dropped to subsonic...I could see the plane coming apart if they were honking on the controls enough. Basically a 1.5g pull became a 10 g pull - WAGing it.
Any F14 guys on here?
