Just a few questions. How long does it take to get the houston base and what do you all think of the houston area? Also whats the deal with pay and hotels durring training? I've heard everything from a one time payment to normal guarantee. Also do they provide single occupancy hotel rooms or do you pay for that on your own? What about aircraft assignments? Does everyone fly the 135 and 145 or one or the other? Thanks.

1. Houston in 2-5 months.
2. You get one lump-sum per diem check. Approx $1500.
3. The hotel is paid for, but you will have a roommate.
4. The 135 and 145 are essentially the same. You will fly both. You will be assigned "ERJ" which is both planes. With Captains it's a little different but you'll see that when you get here.

Thanks for the fast response. Anyone have anything to say about the houston area as far as living there, good or bad?

Ya know I was only there for training, but I will tell you this. I previously had a bid in for IAH, but after working out of EWR for a few months, I changed it back to stay in EWR. You can live cheap up here if you look.. Houston is cheap, but the environment is different. I don't like the heat.

Depends on what you like. Living expenses are comparatively cheap. However it is steaming hot in summer which lasts really long! Good place to be in winter...don't have to shovel snow!!

how are things going over there with the new contract negotiations? what are the chances that you all will get comair rates or better?

We will not get hard Comair pay rates at ExpressJet. But at the end of each year we will have worked less days and our w2's will be larger.

This is due to our vacation policy, training on only work days, profit sharing, and many other contract provisions.

Houston aint that bad. If you like the "city life", live in the Galleria area. Lots of people, clubs, restaraunts. If you want to live close to work, north Houston has lots of nice neighborhoods--new houses up there go for $120-$170k. Pretty cheap! If you like watersports like sailing, kiteboarding, or WINDSURFING!, live down in Clear Lake city, or League city. 25mins. to Galveston, and just over an hour to IAH.

Strike authorization just passed by 98.6%. Rumored rates will be just below Comair, but our W2's should be a little above. We'll see. Good place to be--hope this helps.....

Commuting from DFW

One more question for you XJTers - does anyone commute from Dallas to IAH? How difficult is it? Does XJT have a jumpseat agreement with Southwest?

(OK, that was three questions :D .)

Man, from Plano you can walk to the Eagle crew room at DFW.

Yeah, but I think they prefer that you be employed with the airline first.

Seriously, Eagle would clearly be best from a QOL perspective, and I'm trying to get an interview there...but I'm looking into XJT too, just in case. If I have to commute, I'd rather go to IAH (tons of flights, especially if jumpseating on SWA is possible, and I could drive there in a pinch) than to any number of more distant bases.

We run about 10 Express flights a day out of LUV to IAH. But, if you want to jumpseat on SWA, you can do that too, however, they only run 3-4 flights a day to IAH from LUV field. Most of our pilots commute on us out of LUV.

Commuting is possible from anywhere. That's part of being a pilot. You're expected to commute... People commute from SAN - CLT. Or SEA - MCO. I've even seen HNL - DUJ. Good luck.

What about while your on reserve? Is it realistic to commute then?

Sure, what's more realistic is to spend more time in your crashpad then you own bed. It can be done, but it may wear on you after sometime, especially depending on how far or long you commute.

I did it for sometime. What starts to get old is finishing your reserve period, only to miss the last flight home, or having to give up your last day off to commute to your base so you can go on duty early in the morning.

the test

OH YA there is a huge test. Can you fill your name in the right blank. Then it asks for address, SSN (not too sure about that one), something about job history...

where would be a good place to live for a young single guy in the houston area? preferablly somewhere close to nightlife. also where are good places to go waterskiing and jetskiing in the houston area? do they allow it in any of the lakes nearby or only the bay.
