ExpressJet Jumpseat - Captains discretion?

I heard a rumor today that if you are not on the agreement for ExpressJet or mainline you should be very wary of asking the captain for a ride. I heard that if you are approved for the ride and you are not on the list the company would file suit against you.

It really does not sound right. I was just curious if what I heard had any merit.

Reminds of an issue I experienced last week where a captain (not ExpressJet) gave my buddy a ride, even though he wasn't on the official reciprocal list. When he arrived at his destination, the captain proceeded to yell at him on the jetbridge about how he could be fired for offering the guy a ride.

At ExpressJet we have a reciprical JS Agreement and only those on the list are "authorized" to JS on our aircraft.

However, that does not necessarily mean that the occasional "non-list" pilot catches a ride.

After 9/11 however I believe the TSA and FAA became more interested in exactly who was flying on other airlines a/c.

It is possible that a fine could be levied against the carrier that allows the "non-approved" JS rider access to the aircraft and the companies legal department may try to recoup that money from the offending pilot.

This is not true. We may accomodate any FAR121 carrier. Our list only pertains to people who have priority. Example.....if a comair guy shows up and a XYZ airlines guy shows up the Comair guy take priority. The only time the list comes into play is for the 145 guys (cape air, pacific island airways ect) or no US domestic flag carriers,(Air Cannada or Eva). The people on our "reciprocal list may ride before any of the other airlines we do not have agreements with.

We have specific instructions that only airmen that work for carriers that maintain a reciprocal jumpseat agreement may be allowed to jumpseat. The carriers reciprocal status is supposed to be checked with the gate agent and I've never been approached by unauthorized jumpseaters so the process must work.

How else can we prevent someone from starting their own airline, making an ID badge and jumpseating all over the country for free?

Ummmm, wouldn't it be cheaper AND more glamorous to simply buy a private jet?

I meant a fictitious airline with a phony ID badge. You think the TSA is going to keep these people out of the concourse? They harldy even look at my badge even at airports that have probably never seen a Pinnacle employee.
 
My guess is that Wankel is wanting to know about whether pilots who fly for a Part 91 Corporate or Part 135 Cargo or Charter outfit, who has a company ID can jumpseat on ExpressJet. The answer to that is probably no. After 9/11, the FAA and TSA have been coming down on Part 121 carriers who allow non 121 pilots to jumpseat even though they are just occupying a seat in the back. I know that I was able to occassionally jumpseat on SWA once or twice back in 1999 when I flew for my Part 135 freight company. But, post 9/11, I wouldn't even think about trying it. I'm not sure if you couldn't get yourself in trouble with the FAA and TSA for even trying to do this.
 
Yeah, I do fly for a 135 cargo comany that has schd. runs. I was just wondering what the deal was with this rumor. I want to know what I can and cannot do in a pinch.

I think it depends on what 135 company you work for. I know at Airnet Express, we had explicit jumpseat agreements with most of the airlines out there including Express Jet. We had a guy in charge of our jumpseat committee and every year he went to a convention with all the airlines to discuss jumpseating policy and to sign new agreements. I know this is very rare for a 135 company but we were lucky I guess.
 
Yeah, we have a jumpseat coordinator also. He attends that yearly convention. Thank goodness for that!

I don't know where you are based, but 135 pilots can jumpseat on ATA and Chicago Express. Unlimited jumpseats available. If that helps you at all. This is the only carrier I know of with this policy.

Wankel- If you are flying the Irish Concorde I bet I know where you work. And, you are always welcome on ASA. I gave an ACC guy a ride last month. We offer unlimited seats. We start flying to the Turks in the carribean so hop on down for some sun! Cheers, Wil

Yeah, I got a ride with ASA from CHS-ATL-SAT back in July and was treated really well. Thanks guys!

I will have to keep the Carribean in mind:) Is that out of ATL?

Turks is out of ATL. Any time you need a ride come on over. New weights my a$$!! I'll call dispatch and change cruise alt, dest. alternate, route of flight et cetera!! I don't break rules or SP'S but, I have yet to leave a commuter behind ( I am the Capt after all, ha, ha!)
There is no senario presented where I could not get a JS/non-rev aboard! I live by several airline rules, one is, "leave no Man/Woman behind" I wish you the best and hope to give you a ride. Cheers. Wil
