Position: AIRPLANE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR
GS-2181-12/12

Salary: $62291 per year - $80975 per year

The primary purpose of this position is to oversee advanced soaring
programs, which includes instructing assigned military instructors and
cadets in cross-country and aerobatic flying, directing operations of
the USAFA Cross-Country Team and Aerobatic Competition Team, directing
aerial demonstrations, and providing a direct liaison with the Federal
Aviation Administration (FAA) as a Designated Certified Flight
Instructor Gliders (CFIG) and FAA Flight Examiner (FE). The incumbent
will also serve as a flightline supervisor, and, on occasion, serve as
the deployed commander (DETCO) during training and competition TDYs.
Oversees the 94 FTS Advanced Soaring Officer in Charge (OIC) of
Airmanship-474 (AM-474) program and Coaches the USAFA (94 FTS (AETC)
Cross Country Competition Team. Oversees the 94 FTS Advanced Soaring
Officer in Charge (OIC) of Airmanship-475, (AM-475), responsible to
the Director of Operations for all aerobatic operations. Resource
Management and Cost Center Manager for the Advanced Soaring Program.
Conducts pilot certification flight tests, in accordance with
established FAA procedures, for USAFA cadets, officer, or enlisted
personnel seeking FAA glider pilot certificates. As the Advanced
Soaring Flying Supervisor (Operations Supervisor) the incumbent is the
key focal point for all in flight precautionary and emergency
situations involving advanced soaring aircraft.


KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Knowledge of effective flight instruction techniques to train all
aerial maneuvers in a glider.

2. Knowledge of cross-country and wave meteorology navigation and
thermaling to teach instructors and cadets to discern terrain features
and find wave meteorology in order to keep glider in the air.

3. Knowledge of applicable Federal Aviation Administration and Air
Force directives.

4. Knowledge of Federal Airspace Classification system and how pilots
are authorized to use the various U.S. Airspace segments in a safe and
efficient manner.

5. Knowledge of personnel management principles and policies.

OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS:

1. Must maintain a FAA Class II physical

2. Must maintain a current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
Certified Flight Instructor (Gliders)

3. FAA Certified Ground Instructor

4. FAA Certified Private Pilot, single engine or dual engine land is
high desirable

5. FAA Designated Flight Examiner is highly desirable

6. This is a testing designated position (TDP) under the air force
civilian drug testing program. The employee is subject to random drug
testing.

7. Must obtain and maintain an appropriate security clearance.

8. May occasionally required travel away from the normal duty station
and travel on military and/or commercial aircraft.

9. Overtime may be required.
