I don't have the 2-meter model, but I do have a Vertex 210. For me, it was a tossup between the Vertex and a similar Icom. I went with the Vertex because of the better battery life and the fact that it can automatically calculate density altitude.

I'm not flying much anymore, but I air boss air shows, so needed a portable radio for use on the airport (both for communicating with the tower while driving on the airport, and for communicating with the performers once I take control of the airport from the tower). The Vertex works great.

Thanks Flibmeister. Vertex has a good rep, but I've heard there may be a problem with the VXA 700 model receiving interference on the AM Air band from nearby FM broadcast stations. The two user reviews I've read don't mention where or how the radio was used, antennae placement, etc.

This radio has "out of band" receive only capability on FM which may have a manufacturing flaw. I'm trying to confirm reliability before making this investment.

I occasionally use two meter inflight and would like to carry just one handheld.
