I know so much of this has probably already been posted but here goes.

I'm currently a 767-400 intl copilot for a major with about 9000 hours. I have an Air Force background, flying the F-16 and the T-38. I have a great deal of time as an instructor with both students and teaching pilots to become instructors.

I currently have a job offer flying L-39's as an instructor amongst other things. The boss naturally wants me to get a CFI as well as the type. I'm looking for suggestions for schools to obtain this as quickly and painlessly as possible. At this point in my carreer, I'm really only interested in getting the certificate. The instruction I will be giving will be with mostly seasoned pilots in a military type atmosphere. Most pilots have an extensive civilian flying background. Most training would be to get the type rating and formation instruction.

In the absense of any type of military equivalent rating, I'm probably looking for a firehose one week or so school.

I'm assuming I would initially need to take a course and written tests before the flying training. I've read a bit about Sheble aviation. Any other or better suggestions? I live in Atlanta.

Any advise would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Jim

I second that. They teach the CFI program in Fulton county (charlie brown field?). Its about 2 weeks total. You'll do the MEI as the initial CFI ride though (usually with a DPE in Florida). I'd recommend doing your CFII and CFI single rides with Joey Sanders in Jasper, AL if at all possible.

He's a former F-4 pilot and does a lot of rides for former fighter guys (for good reason). If you explain your situation to him, he should be able to help.

Good luck to you
Steve

What happened to "let is slide?"

Last I heard clyde is still doing checkrides. I just know Gordo in Jasper has a soft spot for former F-__ pilots. He does los of ATP rides for fighter guys in the Seminole and knows that they probibly never flew a piston and after the checkride, probibly never will.

Thanks for the info Steve. I checked with the ATP guys and they are so full, they will not take anyone that is not interested in continuing with them. Can't just do the CFI. Losing too many instructors to regionals I guess.
I would appreciate any info on getting the ground school and written out of the way. Where to get books etc.

I plan to call Sheble and see what they have.
Thanks
Jim

exams4pilots.org is a good place to start (and free) to cram for the written. The gleim book/cd's are pretty good (and probably more thorough) and get the job done fast. I'm not familiar with sheble, but ATP has a binder full of canned lesson plans which you teach from during the checkride/oral. I'm guessing sheble has a similar product?

Feel free to PM me with any specific questions you may have. Its been a while since I taught a CFI course but I can look up any detailed info you may need.

Look into Falcon Aviation Academy - i believe they have a few locations and its run by a current ASA Captain. Seem to have a very good rep on 'other boards.'

Thanks again for suggestions. After doing a little research, would it be feasable to just buy the King (or similar) CFI course on DVD and go take the written tests? Seems like they prepare you to take the tests pretty well. I'd just need to find somewhere to get training for the practical.
