Anyone have information on Evergreen:

1) Pilot domiciles
2) First Officer & Captain pay
3) Upgrade times
4) Typical trip destinations & days gone
5) Are they hiring now?

Thanks in advance.

I can't answer questions 1-4, but for question 5, I'm pretty sure the answer is no. I have a friend who was based here in SEA on the DC-9 who was furloughed Jan 21, along with at least 20 off of the 747. I believe he told me they had lost 2 contracts.

Evergreen over the years has always hired, furloughed, hired, furloughed...a constant cycle as the contracts come and go. They work 16 days a month. Sometimes you do the 16 days all at once (like on the 747. On other fleeets.....the DC-9 for example break it up into shorter trips.). Pay is about what you would expect at a third level supplemental carrier. Upgrade times are lengthy, unless they get a major increase in business, which is rare. Can't help you with the domiciles, since they vary with the contracts that come and go.

None of this is "official" information, just what I have gathered from knowing people who have worked there over the years....and the one friend who was just there. And the only part of it that is absolute "fact" is my friend was furloughed Jan 21st, and had been there about 10 months. They have indicated to him the furlough could be lengthy. But then again, they could get a new contract tomorrow and need pilots. Again, like I said....their history if one of constant furloughs, recalls and hiring, then furloughing again.

flx757 is right on. I was on the DC-8 in 1991-1992. I was hired, furloughed, rehired, furloughed so many times in those two years I can't remember them all. I was often furloughed right on the spot with no notice, and recalled by a phone call and told to report "tomorrow".

They rise and fall with contracts.

Typical

There never has been anything typical about Evergreen at the airline or the helicopter company.

They have had some runs for Quantas that are flown like a normal charter airline but as they offer only ACMI type services and or military contracting, the predictability is not constant.

What I do beg to differ with the previous writer is when he talks about them being a third tier airline. EZ is possibly the most interesting aviation company in the United States.

If you like normalcy, this is not the place for you. If you want an airline type job, this is not for you. If you want big aircraft like pay scales, this is not for you.

If you would like to fight fires in a 747, this is the place. If you want to go get Imelda Marcos out of the Phillipines, this is for you. Want to land in Afghanistan, heh these are the people.

Interesting or not...this is what "third tier" companies do. Things the majors and nationals don't. Hence, that's what makes them third tier. That, and their pay scales. So, in additon to all those "exciting" things that publishers mentioned, if you find being furloughed at every turn, then being recalled on a dime, only to be furloughed again "interesting", then I guess Evergreen is the place for you.

I always love how "out of touch" with the realitly of being a pilot our management friend, the publisher, is. Oh, but I forgot. He knows everything. Even said so once. Said he "wrote the book on it". So, I guess what he says goes. Sorrry for even bothering to post.

I'll leave it with you, and you can choose for yourself if you are interested in a CONSTANT cycle of furloughs and recalls for below standard pay.

Third Tier

Third tier implies that there would be some desire on Evergreen's behalf to be what you call a major is. By the way, I believe that Evergreen is a National carrier. They are doing exactly the type of work that their owner wants to.

While I do not and did not imply that it was a great place for everyone, nevertheless there are people who do not fit nor want to fit into the mold you have chosen.

I am not criticizing those who want to be a line captain for some airline so why do you become a critic of other ways of being. There are pilots who have been at EZ who loved their career there. There are a pile of them at UPS which EZ flew for many years before UPS took over.

We had helicopter pilots flying in SA who liked that kind of high risk work. It certainly was not the pay or the great working conditions.

Frankly, I do not know why you want to take what I said and imply how out of touch I seem to be. I understand perfectly well the life of a pilot. Flying and Whinning are things they do equally well. Be glad to sell you the book I wrote on it.

As I mentioned in my previous thread, I have no interest, and am done debating this subject. Evergreen furloughs, recalls, furloughs, recalls.....ad nauseum. If you wrote the book, then you would know this. If this is the kind of life a pilot thinks they would enjoy, then by all means...apply. I'm not criticizing this lifestyle, just stating the facts of how life is at Evergreen for those that are considering it. Something you neglected to mention in your glowing report of the kind of flying they do. I guess though, you are unable to see the difference, since your entire viewpoint is from the business/management point of view...hence your "they are doing exactly the type of work their owner wants" comment. I'm pointing out the cost the pilots of this company would pay for this owner to do this type of business. And that is to expect to be furloughed at the drop of a hat....over and over.

But, to answer the original poster's question, I don't think they are hiring since they just furloughed, but give them a few months, then they will recall, then maybe hire a few, then furlough again. Maybe, just maybe, during one of your stints between furloughs, you'll get a chance to pick up Imelda Marcos. Then your career would be made.

That's what I mean about being out of touch, publishers. As far as whining pilots, I'm not one. I'm just on here giving the facts as I know them to the original poster.

As for your book, I wouldn't give one rat's a@@ about anything you had to say even if the book were free. I've read your drivel before in your AEPS publication and in your posts here. It's obvious where you are coming from, and it's not where most of the young pilots on this board want to go.

You may have the last word on this and any other subject you desire. Since you have all the answers, anyway. G'day.

Excuse me, but CODs4ever, did you ever get your answers thru PM? Everything I've heard about Evergreen leads me to believe that it's a company I'd be happy to work for - if I ever get out of the AF. 16 day trips are nothing compared to the schedule I work now. I've heard too that the pay for the first 2 yrs is better than probationary pay at a major, but that it tops out pretty quickly. I'm pretty sure one of their permanent pilot bases is JFK, and I think they keep MIA up for ongoing South America contracts. However, I presume they are home-based, since the pilot bases change so often with the contracts. as for locations traveled to, I see them all the time at all the big military airlift hubs worldwide - Yokota, Kadena, Osan, Charleston, Travis, Dover, Ramstein, Frankfurt, Kuwait, Rota, etc.

I was hired into the right seat of the 747 in 99. The D.O. walks in on the first day of class and tells us we are all one contract away from upgrade...and one contract away from furlough. That is just the way they do business. It is never the same and never boring.

You will get to see some great places and some places that you wish you never saw. They do alot for the military...can you say the sand box! We also did some stuff in Africa. Cool, but scarey place to fly. Not friendly to Americans now either.

I am glad I worked there and it was some of the best training that I have received. I am glad I don't work there now too! I had 18 day trips. But if the a/c broke or was delayed, you waited. The 18 day line often turned into 20 or 22 on the road. I was even out for 38 days straight. It was not fun. I threw away my layover clothes after that trip.

The pay was OK but not great. When I was there, first year 747 fo made around 52k/yr. It is pretty flat after that. Great hotels for the 747 crews and the meals were good too. But is definately a third tier airline.

In 91-92 on the DC8 with Evergreen, one of my trips with reserve at JFK was some 42 days straight! The one day in 7 was taken on the road and also I remember many days spent while the airplane was broken and waiting for the parts/mechanics to fix it. Not too long after that I was furloughed (again).
