Is the Evergreen 747 fire bomber being used to fight the fires in Southern California?

I think the program was scrapped.

We heard it was scrapped but then there is a pilot currently in training for it. Right now though it is hauling cargo.

Program is not scraped. We should start again early in 2008. FAA put that 6 cycle for every 1 flown on the plane so that killed it for this year. I think they plan on flying for the forest service in 2008. For now the plane is out flying cargo.

Starting in Jan, we will see a-100 being converted to Supertanker permanently. Then, once the rest of the -100's are retired, they will each be converted.

N470EV, the "real" supertanker isn't going to socal anytime soon, because the fire is under the area of CAL FIRE, not the USFS. We are not a CAL FIRE customer. The ex Omni DC-10 however, is so they are flying.
