BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A global deal on emissions curbs by airlines struck late on Friday will allow the European Union to press ahead with plans to charge airlines for emissions permits from 2012, the European Commission said on Saturday.
The EU agreed in 2008 that airlines should be included in its emissions trading scheme (ETS), which forces industry to pay for permits for each tonne of carbon dioxide they emit into the atmosphere.
The ETS is the EU's main tool for combating climate change and it wants to see the system adopted worldwide. Aviation is responsible for some 2 percent of the world's carbon emissions.
Some U.S. airlines had challenged the EU's right to include their flights into and out of Europe within the ETS.
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a United Nations agency, adopted a resolution on Friday to reduce aviation emissions with a "roadmap" up to 2050 for the 190 member states.
The aviation sector would seek to become 2 percent more fuel-efficient every year and to cap emissions from 2020.
European Commissioners for Transport Siim Kallas and for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard said in a statement they welcomed the breakthrough after almost a decade of deadlock with a deal to cover over 90 percent of worldwide air traffic.
"Crucially, ICAO has refrained from language which would make the application of the EU's ETS to their airlines dependent on the mutual agreement of other states," the Commission said, adding this had led to stalemate at the last ICAO assembly in 2007.
"This time, the EU agreed to engage constructively in dialogue with third countries during the implementation of its ETS, notably regarding how to deal with emissions from incoming flights from third countries," she continued

I guess we should expect temperatures to start dropping soon with this 'solution'. Oh, to put the evil life-sucking, carbon emitting airline industry in to perspective; the cement industry in China alone emits more 'global warming' CO2 than the entire planet's aviation community...combined.

Facts have no place in this thread. Al Gore will be along shortly in his G3 to tell you how wrong you are.

Global Warming= the scam of the century!

May be Al Gore should limit all his flying??? All this does is pull more planes out and pilots too!!!

Everyone knows that Global Temperatures change inversly proportional to the number of pirates world wide.

I think it is time we start charging the sh!t out of every foreign operator that uses our airspace/facilities/fuel....

What is good for the goose is good for the gander!

Okay... taking your quote at face value, I just wonder how you can live with being a professional pilot... helping the problem and all. So... my assumption that you are most likely a person of principle would lead me to believe that you would quit. I guess there's a bit of a cost with that.

Personally, I don't buy the whole "man made global warming" scam. The cost of this scam will hurt us all... and make people like manbearpig and his ilk rich(er) beyond belief.

Yeah, along with you logging off the internet PERMANENTLY! You're wasting precious atoms with your nonsensical drivel. Why don't you go "pump" something into the atmosphere.

So there shouldn't be a cost with trashing the environment? Should your local chemical company be able to dump their waste in the river if it runs through their property? How about if their factory is on top of the aquifer your town gets its water from? The cheapest solution is to just dump it in the ground, right? Your wife and kids might get cancer, but you'll save 12 cents on some product you buy. Can't let any pesky government regulations get in the way of that.

I just think there needs to be a cost associated with pollution. A carbon tax or cap and trade are the free market solution. The less you pollute the less you pay. We can't go on with our heads in the sand pretending there's no limit to how much pollution we can dump into the atmosphere.

Quite a valid point actually. There was a website out there showing your carbon print by browsing the net. It's much higher than I thought.
