Just wondering if anyone else currently in the ERJ thinks it has problems discharging static electricity, or also gets some wicked static in the radios near thunderstorms? Or thinks that some of the lightning strikes are really strong static discharges? post on-

YES.........To all of the above. Supposedly the most struck 121 aircraft flying today. Hmmmm....maybe cause the radar sucks. XJet is finally going to equip 11 of our aircraft with lightning detection equipment as a test to see if that helps. MX dudes must get tired of filling holes.

BTW flying into SYR last summer we either got struck or caused a static discharge flying through a cumulous cloud, not a cumulonimbus or TCU just a plain old big puffy white cloud. Go figure.

The CRJ has the same problems. Too much composite, not enough metal, and doesn't discharge electricity very well.

I have only had a "discharge" once in this plane in 1,100 hours. As far as TRW's are concerned, I've never flown into one or gotten any closer to one than I have in the ATR or SF3 - and I've flown this airplane and the others all over this fine country of ours. Yes the radar is weak because of its small dish, but if one uses it carefully and interprets returns conservatively, it does the job fine enough.

I DO wish that I didn't have to work so hard using it though. A bigger dish would be nice!
:rolleyes:

I took a lightning strike in the ERJ....according to ATC we passed through a level 5-6 cell while the excellent radar that honeywell provides painted clear skies. It was night so the radar was all we had to go by.

The lightning blew out a section of the elevator the size of a football and smoked all the seals around the right side passenger windows.

Not to mention the pain I had in my knees for an hour or so and the hair on our heads that stuck straight up.

Mayday

static cling.....

Nearly lost comms flying thru a snow storm last month. Talked to mx, they said they couldn't do much. "The grounding on this thing sucks."

Well, FIX it!!

The FAA is conducting a study from what I hear.

does anyone know where i can get a "flux capacitor"?

Because on a good static day i am sure we got the required 1.21 jigawatts of power and were well above 88 mph so......... if i am gonna get whacked by lightning or a static discharge, lets at least make it interesting.

That was funny as he11 man!

Anywho.....a buddy of mine working for CHQ was just telling me the other day that he's now been hit twice in the EMB since last June! I'm not Mr. Wizard to figure out why they're "attracting" lightning, but something doesn't sound to safe about it.
