If someone is hired into the A340 and wants to get on the 747, do they allow you to bid off? Vice versa?

Can you be an SO on the 747 and bid JFO on A340? Vice versa?

Thanks

No. Why is it important?

Hired as an S/O on the A340/B744 means you spend your whole period as an S/O on the A340/B744. Your upgrade (S/O to JF/O) is at the company's behest and onto the type they deem most appropriate for your competence and experience.

You can get off type if you bid and are awarded a base which is served by another type (A340 to B744 and vice-versa). There are no bases outside HKG for the B777 at present.

If it's a big issue with you, DON'T say anything at the interview - There are literally 7000+ other applicants who don't care what they fly, just as long as they get the job offer.

One more thing - take the highlights out of your hair! (from another thread - I can't believe that anyone I would fly with would ask that!) Cathay is a conservative company in a conservative industry.

Is it really that competative for Cathay. I am under the impression that not a lot of people want to be based in HK.

Do they send apps out to everyone that sends a resume?

Highlights in hair?? What are you talking about?? Who would do that for an interview?

I feel that if someone is willing to give up the QOL in the states to fly in HK, at least be able to fly the 747 if they want to eventually.

BTW, do you think the 744 will be around with Cathay awhile? 10+ more years?

THanks!!!!!

Yes, it is that competitive.

If you don't want to work in Hong Kong, don't apply. Sooner or later you will work (full-time) out of Hong Kong (if you want anything more than a second-tier freighter salary, that is).

No, some just get an acknowledgement and a reference number with an "official" application form with all the information they require.

You may then receive a form letter to the effect that you are under-qualified but to keep on updating, or a thank you note. If you get the thank you note, your application will be held on file until you are considered for a first (screening) interview, normally done near your general geographic area - JFK or LAX in the US, YVR or YYZ in Canada.

Dream On. This is Cathay, not DL. SW or UA. Touchy-feely stuff is not their forte'. You go where they want you to be. How bad could it be anyway? B777/B744/A340/A330...it's all good stuff (sort of).

No. Definately not pax versions. Freighters - probably.

Good luck.

On the "highlights" thing - there was some turkey on PPrUne asking whether he should take the highlights out of his hair for an interview - I sh!t you not. If anyone is that vain or stupid, I say go for it...wouldn't want him as my F/O anyway. All this mutilation crap doesn't go down well in interviews either - tats, rings, etc. Shows a real lack of maturity - ask a few ex-employees.
