I almost decided to go there. The only thing stopped me was Louisiana pays for your tution if you stay in the state for college. Once I learned of that, I decided to go to Louisiana Tech University for their aviation program.

I feel sorry for all those guys/gals going over there and getting ripped off.

;) Hard to argue with FREE!!!:p

Paying anything up front removes your advantage as a consumer.

What is "Guaranteed Employability" ? With what standards are you going to gage this by? If you get an interview and do not pass it… How are you going to know if CAPT has failed you and not made you employable? You can be sure CAPT will not accept responsibility for it if you do not insist on some way to hold them accountable.

Sure sounds like the guy who started the website botched one or more regional interviews.:D They never said you could fuc& off, not study, blow the interview, etc, and still get "the job"....

consider the source before jumping on the bandwagon.- Obviously you should realize this is so one sided for a reason, pretty simple after briefly looking at the site.. Maybee next chance that comes up he will study just a tad harder...

come on folks...

Sorry to disappoint you 350Driver but the site is simply up to help naive consumers and aspiring aviators see through marketing propaganda, program stability, and what they should be asking and looking for if they are going to be attending this Professional Pilot Program. The points are from current students who asked me to help them warn others and help others learn from their lack of insight.

But I really like your story better, much more glamorous. Maybe you’ll get it right next time, are you sure your not really a writer for The Enquirer posing as an airline pilot.:D

Thanks for posting the quote and getting the word out!

Today's regional and major airlines are not so focused on stick and rudder skills anymore. Don't get me wrong, your ability to fly will certainly be scrutinized, but does not seem to carry as much weight as most people think.

These airlines are not looking for "pilots". They are looking for people that can manage a flight deck, have an understanding of good customer service and happen to know how to fly!

Can anyone believe this?

These airlines are not looking for "pilots".

Well he&$, I shouldn't have spent all that money on flight training then.

Quotes were taken off CAPT website.

Those quotes were taken from someone posting on the CAPT "message board", not Riddles website. Riddle is a good school, too bad this program isn't working out for some.

Embry Riddle CAPT has updated their site making changes to many of the FAQ’s www.captiscrap.com pointed out as being false. Looks like the truth is coming out.

I can’t believe Embry Riddle’s Board allows the CAPT leadership to run this program like this. Surely they must be embarrassed with the Universities overall reputation on the line.

JB74,

I will not argue with you that ERAU is not a good school. In fact I am finishing my degree program through ERAU's distance learning. I feel that ERAU's name holds some prestige in aviation and their program really fits my needs and schedule for finishing up. So far (I finish my AS in March and BS in Jan '04) I have enjoyed success with the distant learning and WOULD RECOMMEND it to anyone needing to finish their school.

My concern, as is some others on this board, comes with marketing. I hope that ERAU has not lowerd itself to the level of Gulfstream or TABExpress in trying to lure flight students.

We were all there once as a new student with the airline gleam in their eye. When we started most of us didn't know the routes available or the best path to take.

Potential flight students need to be made aware that there is no easy path to a good job. No one is going to hire a 300 hour pilot to fly anything outside of a flight instructor job. If a student is going to go the civilian route they need to know that years of flight instructing, pipe line, jumpers, or some under paid intro-corporate job in a 310 or 58 is in their cards. If you want to go military be prepared for 10 years of service and some years of almost no flying and a desk job working in S2 (thats what we called it in the army).

People prepared to lay down 50K or better by trying to buy their way into a job need to realize that when the day comes that they are interviewing for their dream job at XXX airline/frac/corp. that the interviewers most likely paid their dues while living in some crap hole apartment driving a 12 year old vehicle. These people will probably not be too impressed by someone who tried to move themselves up the line through money instead of experience.

These airlines are not looking for "pilots". They are looking for people that can manage a flight deck, have an understanding of good customer service and happen to know how to fly!

I hope this is not the mentality that ERAU is promoting. I would like to see how this works out with someone trained with this theory when their right enigne in a B1900 goes to Beta on short final. And it will happen. I was able to drink a beer with my buddy this weekend and not attend his funeral because he is a PILOT, and was able to stick the thing on the runway and not burn in.

Any potential students reading this website need to talk to someone in the business and not just rely on the horsetrader selling you a dream.

I hope that ERAU has not lowerd itself to the level of Gulfstream or TABExpress in trying to lure flight students.

As a Riddle alumn (non aero sci), I completely agree. No offense to any CAPT students, but the existence of this program damages (in my opinioin) the reputation I've always known Riddle to possess.

CAPT and other P-F-T are all crap

ERAU gave me my first full-time flying job fifteen years ago. As it turned out, it was my best flying job. Therefore, it saddens me that a small part of Riddle is groveling for the P-F-T market.

The CAPT program may not be true P-F-T. True P-F-T is an employment issue, in which an employer requires that a new-hire pay it for training as a condition of employment. But, the CAPT objective is clear; to buy you a job. In that regard, it and true P-F-T are the same.

This segment from the FAQ is especially rich, or sad, depending on your point of view:

Why did CAPT select the MD-90 EFD and why an MD-90 type rating? For all these reasons, a student who successfully earns an MD-90 EFD type rating will be able to make a quick transition to whichever variant of regional jet they are assigned on their first tour of duty.

Earning an MD-90 type rating confirms that successful cadets have met and succeeded the stringent requirements of training to an airline-level standard. What this means to a hiring manager at a regional airline is that CAPT graduates meet and exceed the skill set required to fly a transport category jet aircraft . . . . Training in this device and earning a type rating clearly prepares cadets for entry into today's modern flight deck in the shortest amount of transition time and enhances their overall employability . . . .

(emphasis added)

It sounds like the Riddle academics are at it again. Idealism and no grasp of real-world hiring. Perhaps the MD-90 type lets this P-F-T program slip past the second prong of the P-F-T test because the type is a tangible credential that can be marketed anywhere, but H.R. will not view it in the light for which it is intended. I realize that more and more regionals are starting new-hires in RJs, but a paid-for transport-category Douglas type on a 500-hour pilot's resume will still be seen as hilarious. Maybe more so than a B1900 type on a TAB Express graduate's resume.

Another gem:

What is the application and pilot selection process?

First , you must apply online. Upon receipt of the completed application and Background Investigation fee a CAPT Staff member will contact you to schedule your interview and Aptitude Test battery. Testing is conducted at our Daytona Beach facility at the first week of every month. Please note: the scheduled test date is also contingent on successfully completing the background check.

Cost of application

Background Check ..........................................$180
Aptitude, skills and personality test ..............$300
Interview/Simulator evaluation .......................$300
Total.....................................................................$780*

* Candidates who enroll and start classes within 120 days of acceptance will receive full credit of these fees towards the cost of the program.

Purpose of evaluation

Background check to establish potential eligibility for employment by a U.S. domestic regional airline.

Aptitude, skills and personality test evaluates a candidate's potential for the program and an airline career.

Interview/Simulator evaluation offers a career "reality" check and assesses a candidate's ability to learn in a complex training environment.

Reality check, my ass. The so-called "application process" proclaimed by P-F-T vendors must be aviation's second-biggest sophistry after the pilot shortage. Once again, let's be real. Are they telling me that no matter how much of a bonehead an applicant might be that they would refuse a check for $65K?

The usual P-F-T caveats apply. The P-F-T caveat that is not discussed enough is the "guaranteed interview" "promise." The punctuation is intentional. How many guaranteed interviews are promised? One? Probably. More than one? Not bloody likely. Will "the interview" be conducted in good faith, or just as sop to the P-F-T customer to fulfill contract obligations? Please, consider what I'm saying. Aside from the usual preaching and temperance lectures about P-F-T, read the contract before you enroll for Riddle P-F-T, or any P-F-T.

my 2 cents

I read the information, felt the guy's disappointment, but can't quite feel sorry for him. There are always those who are in a real big hurry. CAPT, Tab and GIA all cater to these folks. It took me almost two years to get through all my current certificates. I paid as I went and stayed debt free. Today's instant gratification society can't handle the wait. Now this SOB is stuck with a large debt and no job. It's hard to feel bad for this guy. Hopefully he'll get his CFI and his first "flying" job.

ACA's Director of Operations visited Embry Riddle CAPT today and said he can't wait to start hiring CAPT grads in... 2006 !

WOW the students that start CAPT in Sept 2005 must be so excited... Wait that's 2 years away, and it will be Independence Air by then right?

CAPT still has not found anyone to speak to the current students that are willing to hire them... Watch out future CAPT students.

Current Embry Riddle CAPT students better start working on that CFI... That's a lot of down time from now till 2006.

I considered ERAU when I was looking into Colleges; but the price scared me away.

I had considered ERAU a few years ago. I had been a dean's list student at my locall CC, and hoped to find "scholarship" money. The 25 year old student recruiter had assured me that such money was available, and he probably thought so, since he dealt with so many teenage mothers who are marginal students ("C" students, no less) and there is plenty of money for them. For me? Nada.

The word "scholarship" has become synonymous with "social engineering", where it is a matter of what special interest group you fall into, not what kind of "scholar" you might be. No money for middle aged white guys with 3.75 averages.

So, no scholarship, no ERAU. Could I earn my way through as a flight instructor? Well, unlike other college "staff" positions, there was so little free credit time for staff members as to be laughable. Maybe the basic notion is that a flight instructor is just another student, and not a "professional." Sound familiar?

So, there is no surprise to me that ERAU has put together this program. Well-funded students and other eligible "scholars" are welcome. People with little money and and high GPAs, or older than your twenties and the chances go way down.

The question for you is this: will you be taken in by this nonsense?
