Yes. It involved a US Navy helo pilot on an exchange tour with the Brits. I don't believe anyone was killed, but the USN pilot was seriously injured and is in the hospital in pretty serious condition. From what my friend told me, the injuries will probably keep the USN Pilot out of the cockpit for good.
Sounds like the crash happened on takeoff. My friend is a USN helo bubba from the west coast world as was the pilot in the crash.
Yeah, Daddy-O was a good buddie from my last squadron. I just heard the news last week, right before a maintance flight. It kinda scared me, and when I thought about it some more, I felt sick.... I was wondering what caused the problem. I heard a tail rotor blade departed the aircraft.
Daddy-O was a killer surfer and a great guy. I hope he will retain the use of his legs, and will someday be able to hit the waves again.
It just goes to show that what we do is not as safe as time and experience may make things seem.
Looks like you probably know more than I do about Daddy-Os condition if you were in his old squadron. My west coast buddy is Skinny, he and I went to college together at OSU.
I just e mailed 'The Mayor', aka Skinney, a few days ago. He sounds like he is doing well at the RAG. All of us are praying for Daddy-O. As is my understanding, the Brits are being very hush-hush about the incident.
