Any 91 Operators Using A Tablet Type Device For Jepp View?

What Type Of Issues Have To Be Considered?

We are using an ADR FG4000 efb with Jeppview and Flight Deck installed along with XM Weather. We also have a bluetooth gps receiver that we can use on either program. We have had ours for a year and the only real issue I have with the efb is it's sometimes hard to see in bright daylight other than that we have had no problems with it or Jeppesen products on it. We do always print out the charts for our destination and alternate though and we also carry our old Fugitsu pc as a back up.

Been doing it for years without a glitch. If you're not afraid of change, EFB's can greatly simplify your life. There's a recent thread on the subject (maybe last week). Give it a chance. Good luck. If you need help in the transition, I need a job.

It depends on what Fed you ask. Better yet, don't ask. Read and do. Info about that is on last weeks thread.

Anyone look at or try anywhere map? Info at www.anywheremap.com. I'm still on Jepp Q-service and looking. What do others think of this product? I was thinking of the 8" and the smaller as back up.

HEADWIND

We use a Panasonic Toughbook with Jeppview and Flightdeck installed. A Dell laptop is kept in the back as a backup system. No real hassles. Sometimes it is worthwhile to print an airport diagram before departure. Low approaches are not bad, all the pertinent info can be displayed on the MFD or jotted down on the landing card (DH, missed app. procedure, etc.). The biggest issue I have is flying with guys that keep it on their lap and stare at it through the whole approach. Like any technology there comes a time to fly the plane first. According to the Advisory Circular this type of system is a Class I EFB with no restriction or FAA needes for use.

The ADR FG7000 appears to have resolved that problem. It is larger and works better in the sunlight. We also print out the destination and alternate, plus have Jeppview on at least one of the crews' laptops. It sure beats having to do revisions for the whole world, which we used to do.

Contact paperless cockpit in MEM 901-240-3594. They have a setup that uses a server and a tablet pc that works alot better than the typical stand alone tablets. They also have a new server that has just come out that is considerably faster than their current model or any of the stand alone units. JeppView and FlightDeck need lots of CPU power to run propely. They can also set up the server and tablet to comunicate via wireless.

With GPS input you can have the tracking functions that FlightDeck has to offer and you can also have live weather from WSI and I think XM right at your finger tips. It blows ATC away when you start asking for deviations for weather 800 miles in front of you.

We are currently using the first generation of the Paperless servers (two per aircraft) and will soon be upgrading to the newer faster servers soon. A dual installation will run you somewhere in the neighborhood of $20K.

We are setup to run the system wireless with a printer hidden in the back of the airplane. If we forget to print a chart that we want or have to divert en route, we can print what ever we want on the fly.

We looked at the 7000 at the NBAA convention and plan to get one soon and just operate with 2 efb's.

We Are Looking At Motion Computing Ls800 Tablet.

Any Input???

The 1.2Ghz might be a little slow and you will want a at least the 30GB hard drive with the 512MB memory options. JeppView and FlightDeck are very bloated programs.

If you don't have the CPU power and the memory space to run the program, you are going to be frustrated when the charts you want don't pop right up when you want.

The best thing you can do is get one or two different tablets that you think you like and try them out to see which one you like best. You can load JeppView/FlightDeck on them and not activate the program for thirty days. DON'T ACTIVATE THE PROGRAM, you only get a limited number of sight keys (4 I think) and Jeppesen won't give you more. The program CD's are not of the greatest quality and some CD drives have a hard time reading them. The quality has gotten better but there are still problems.

Pay attention to the screen resolution and how the programs operate on the tablet. Depending on the size of the screen on the tablet, the charts on the screen will be a little smaller than actual paper charts. If the resolution is less than great, you will find the charts hard to read, especially in bright sun light. If the program operates less than optimum you will not be happy with the tablet.

You will find that you still need to print out certain charts for departure and destination. Especially the charts that would be fold out charts in the paper subscription. These charts are cumbersome to view on a tablet PC and it is best that they be printed.

Before you settle on a tablet, be sure you are completely satisfied with it. If you are not 100% happy with your choice you will wish you were still using paper.

We have an ADR 3000 and a 4000. I like the 4000 more because it puts out more heat to warm my weeeeenus when I set it on my lap (and it is ALWAYS on my lap).

Guys,

I think you're working too hard on this. We haven't printed a single chart since we got this figured out. We have 2 types of EFB, Fujitsu 1500's and HP 1100's. Both are very light, small, and thin, and they work very well. Using the outline/zoon feature lets you see any area of a "folding" chart, and the "circle R" key brings it right back. We have had absolutely no issues with speed, and we use a PDF AFM for Perf charts and PDF flightplan info emailed from ARINC Direct on the tablet as well. None of us are the least bit tempted to return to paper for anything other than the enroute charts, and we have almost the entire western hemisphere in 3 binders - more room for crew meals in the cockpit!
In addition, contrasted with Motion Computing or other specialized EFB's, ours are less than $2000 each with bumper-to-bumper 3 year warranties including screen. We do carry a Canon i-80 battery-powered printer, which needs to get a hit off the power plug once a month or so, but we have thus far rarely used it except for "welcome aboard" sheets. I cannot imagine returning to paper binders. Once we add Wx Works during the C Check, this will be a complete solution.

Same at our company, Part 135 and 91, 2 EFBs in the cockpit, printer in the bag for safety/emergencies.

We are not required to print anything out ever....that doesn't mean we don't when it's crappy out or feel it's necessary.
