Which airplane is the "whale"? For some reason I always thought it was the DC-10. Is it the 74? That would make more sense hence the hump.
 
Actually, there's about 30 or so types or individual aircraft with that nickname. From Shamu, to "Topkapi" Airbus, to a colorful ANA B747, to an old Douglas light bomber I believe. Care to be more specific?
 
The 74 was the Whale, and the 73 was the Guppy, back when they both rolled out.

There's an interesting thread over on PPrune.org about naming the A-380. Run a search for it.
