Do you have to be an ATP to fly as a 135 captain, (I.E. have a 135 ATP), and do you need a first class medical?

I have my ATP, and my current company maintains that you do, but I know for a fact that my first company NONE of the BE58, BE90, and BE200 pilots had an ATP and all they did was 135. I also know they were legal because there was no company check airman and all 6 month proficiency checks had to be done with their POI at the FSDO.

What's the answer?????

You answered your own question...

I suppose so, I'd just like to have something concrete to take to my boss so I can say, "here it is, and no, I don't have to go get a bleeping medical this month."

You need an ATP to be a 135 captain in turbojet equipment.

OK, so that would make me need a first class medical. Got an FAR or something to back that up? Or is it just an ops spec thing? Thanks in advance!

naaaah, not tonight. Getting over a cold. I've done like 40 posts today, and I think I should change my handle to CapnPhlegm.

Eeeeeww....I even grossed myself out. :D

Correction: You need an ATP to be a 135 captain in turbojet equipment in passenger carrying operations. But you can fly freight all night long without an ATP.

In the company I used to work for in the heydays of the late 90s, we had very skilled, experienced and competent Falcon 20 captains that weren't old enough to hold an ATP, and often teamed up with even younger SICs. Both had only commercial certificates and the PIC would have the type rating on his commercial.

Oftentimes, after parking their midsize jet after a tough duty day, they then had to bum a ride to the hotel, because in the eyes of most rental car companies, they weren't mature enough to crew a Ford Focus.
