I am about to get out of the military and re-locate back home to CT outside NYC. I have been flying Scout and Attack Helicopters in the military, but have also been working hard on building up my FW multi-time. I have a lots of Helo experience, but also do have my FW ATP and MEI. I really would like to fly just FW, but would definately not mind finding a job that requires a pilot to fly both FW and Helos. If I could get my foot in the door flying helos first, I would do that.

A friend of mine working at teterboro told me that since todays aircraft are so complicated, that in the corporate world I should concentrate on either Helos or FW. I beg to differ on that, as a helo is like a scooter to me, and there are plenty of people who fly Airliners during the week, and fighters for the guard, without being overwelmed

I would just like to hear from you pros in Biz aviation. Is there a Niche for Dual rated pilots, or should I concentrate soley on the FW side. Thanks in advance.

Pete

I'm on the Left Coast, but a lot of dual rated guys in the Northeast - your country. AMEX, companies with offices on Wall Street, etc. Check a NBAA members guide. Most of the guys I've known love the opportunity to fly both. AND I don't know why. but a serious "rotor head" gets in a S-76, Dauphin, etc., with some company that has a G-IV, G-V, Challenger etc. and bang he's right seat in the heavy iron and Capt before long. Know several Chief Pilots/Managers that started out in helicopters. Check out HAI http://www.rotor.com/

There's definetatly a niche, albeit a small one. LazyB mentioned some good companies, some other ones you might consider are some air ambulance companies that operate both and wealthy individuals that need someone to fly the helicopter off their yacht and to their jet. Ya, its a small niche, but if you can find the right gig it can be a very rewarding job.

Try United Technologies Corporation out of KBDL. They fly 2 S-76's plus 3 Hawker 1000's, a GIV and a GEX.

It might be out of your way, but don't forget Textron in PVD. They operate Citations and Bell helo's (obviously!).

Dual rated jobs

I found that dual rated jobs are hard to come by. Most companies want you to fly either FW or RW, but not both. It seems that too many people feel it is too difficult to change back and forth between the two. That's definitely not the case, as you know. I fly fixed wing at my "normal" job, and RW at my "other" job. I had a dual rated job for a short time, but I lived by the pager and was called at all hours of the day and night. There were just 2 pilots for the airplane and helo, and I was the only one RW rated. I opted to leave the corporate world and go to a fractional to fly FW on a schedule, and fly RW on the side - when I choose.

FracPilot,
Thanks for the advice. Sounds like a good switch to your current position. I rather would fly just FW myself, but willing to go thru that "sucking it up" period if it could get me some good FW time under my belt.

FW vs RW

Thanks for the advice. Sounds like a good switch to your current position. I rather would fly just FW myself, but willing to go thru that "sucking it up" period if it could get me some good FW time under my belt.

I enjoy flying RW from time to time. I spend so much time at the Flight Levels, bored out of my skull, that I enjoy the opportunity to get down and dirty in a helo. Nothing like flying NOE or landing in an unfamiliar 60'x60' area at night with obstacles on all sides. I only fly about 15 hours of RW a month, but thrive on every second of it.

Lazy B,
Thanks a lot of for that link. Wow, a flying job that I am actually exceeding the mins on..lol. I will fire off a resume to them ASAP. That Bell 430 looks like an awesome ride.

FracPilot,
I understand your desire to get it on sometimes. Hopefully I will be able to satisfy both urges in the future. There is something to be said for flying right on the edge for the entire duration of your flight.

Thanks for all the help.

I read in a Pro Pilot magazine that Pfizer out of Morristown NJ has dual-rated pilots on its S-76 and GIV/GV fleets. That would be a great job - fly S-76s locally and then take a GV to Europe - great opportunity...

Check out Pfizer Corporation... I think the flight department is located out of Morristown NJ.

Good luck

If you're interested in a warmer climate and lower cost of living, Milliken Co in Greenville, SC periodically advertises for dual rated pilots. I think they have S76s and Citations. Their ads stipulate that the applicant MUST be dual rated.

Good Luck
