I saw one at the gate in CVG the other day so have at least one left.

They recently anounced they're going bye-bye in 2004.. 763's will take their place on trans-atlantic flights, 777 on the Japan flight. Some 763's will probably be moved off of domestic routes like ATL-SAN to pick up the slack.. :(

All but 3 will be retired by fall 2003 , with those staying on the pacific routes. Supposedly DAL will take delivery of a few more 777's by 2004 and then the last 3 MD-11's will be gone. Last bid cut the pilot staffing in half. No report on when the next displacement comes out....

Is the reason they're getting rid of them maintenance only or do they just cost too much to operate otherwise (maintenance excluded)? I rode on a couple from Portland to Atlanta and really liked the room between the seats and overhead storage bins. I never got to see the cockpit though   :D

The MD11 isn't really a maintenace hog, but it isn't really cost efficient either. I believe the main reason Delta wants to get rid of them is the overcapacity issue. They pretty much know that if they could fill it 3/4 of the way, then they could pack a 767-300ER. I heard someone say that they wanted to see each of them for $30million, but Fedex and UPS were only offering $25million. I believe they cost over $100million each to buy new.
The cockpit was very spacious (I jumped on them a lot to England), but most of the guys that I saw fly it complained a lot about it's flying characteristics. A lot of them thought it was hard to land also, but then again a lot of them were only landing it once or twice a month-----and I am sure their landing skills were a little rusty. It does suck though when you get rid of big equipment with senior guys flying it-----it all trickles down hill.
I wonder what will happen when United gets rid of more of their 747-400's? Ouch!

Bye Bye----General Lee:eek:
