I have had to jump through the FAA's hoops for a special issuance medical for the past 12 years or so. That was for fairly common disorders, controlled high blood pressure, inactive thyroid and kidney cancer. Now a couple of other things have been added to the mix which are also disqualifying for regular issuance, specifically type 2 diabetes, and chronic lymphotic leukemia, which is dormant and requires no treatment. All of these will no doubt require letters from attending physicians, and I will have these at the end of January, assuming there has been no change. I am looking for advice from anyone who hs dealt with multiple issues such as these, and also for anyone who has had any experience with the new service of AOPA which is intended to assist in obtaining special issuance medical certificates.
