just curious if anyone flew newer jet equipment for a medevac contract?

the "norm" is to have old Lr35's,etc.

With mx costs rising with an old airplane I wonder when it makes sense to upgrade the fleet?

I guess it's all up to the medevac provider! They'll get what they pay for!

I know some Citation V's are used and those are probably the newest jet's I've seen.

Speaking of Citation Vs... those companies you speak of, were they just running organs in those? We just got a II and I'm not sure what the future holds for it, but OMG...no way will a stretcher and patient fit through that door. One of my old companies had an S/II with that big clamshell door on it, which would be great for patient flights. Just curious.

The Citation V's had the clamshell door installed.... and any designated medevac jet that doesn't have a big door is NOT FUN.

we also had a C550 without the big door..... and it was very awkward at times.

If you just transport kids or organs.... it's probably not a big deal, but when you have to tip the 400# patient on their side to get them inside the door....... you rethink the $$$$$ clamshell door option. (I don't know what cessna would charge for the retrofit... but it can't be cheap!)

our contract stipulates that aircraft used must have Cargo Doors,etc.... for ease of patient loading/unloading. If the contract doesn't mandate the doors..... they probably won't be installed...$$$$$.

medevac jets

There is a C550 operating out of Dallas TX, mostly
kids. So the regular door doesn't seem like such a problem.
There is a Citation Bravo out of Birmingham AL with
a wide door mod by Cessna. It was approx $250K.
The crew said it was the only modded Bravo around.
 
Best plane for medevac?

I think the majority of "jets" we'll ever see will be of the older variety due to money constraints.......

BUT..... if you could pick the ultimate Jet for medevac... which would it be.... for runway performance/range/speed,etc....1-2 patients. 2 medics and 1-2 escorts.

I will put my vote in for the Citation 560 Ultra or Encore..... ~420-430kt cruise...1700-1900 range.... straight wing for rwy performance.

the mission would further dictate my "vote"... but this is my all-around VOTE.

The Lear 35 I fly for ambulance is from the eairly 80's.

That makes it one of the youngest at 25 years old!!

Can't beat the 36" door of a Lear 35 or 25 and "ground level" loading (i.e. no steps like in a Hawker or large Citation).

early 80's is brand new in medevac years!!! I bet it still smells new.

where are you flying this "newer" lear?

Do you think the "age" of the airplane.... or the quality of MX determines how much time the a/c is down for mx issues?
