Hi, I'm thinking about applying for an FO positin with China Airlines. Does anyone know anything about this company? Thanks.

go to pprune.com and to the Far East forum. If there's info available, it'll be there. pprune is mostly a non-USA av forum.

Thanks, checked it out, seems like a lovely place.
PPrune or China Airlines ?

There are only three expat airlines in the world that you can go to as an F.O. and have a reasonable chance to upgrade; they are Cathay Pacific, Dragonair, and Emirates. I would choose to work for Dragonair, Cathay Pacific, and Emirates in that order. Some of the Japanese contracts have a shot at upgrade as well but I am not familiar with them and they are contracts versus permanent employment by the carrier.

China Airlines, EVA Air, and a few others hire first officers and say they will upgrade you after the first of second contract but it doesn't often happen. I know a lot of guys who worked at EVA and left because the promises were broken. It would appear China Airlines is doing the same thing now from what I am reading on PPrune.

The other part to this is: why would you want to be an F.O. in Asia ? You may not know any better, but the life of an F.O. at an Asian carrier can be brutal, excepting Cathay and Dragon as they are primarily expat run with western cockpit culture. You couldn't pay me enough money to be an F.O. at China Airlines.

That said, and since my wife is Taiwanese, I would seriously consider a Captain position as I quite like Taiwan and the pay is decent.

Dragonair is NOT expat run. Primary (controlling) ownership is Red Chip (China), as is all executive management with the exception of the chief pilot position. ( He is British)

With Cathay, we were primarily British run, but that has been, and will continue to change. Though DT is our fearless leader, it is now the mainland that calls all the shot; for political reasons.

Cheers,

Unfortunately EVA will not recruit any DEC onto their fleets and as for China Airlines, you need to be type rated on any of their widebodies. So, be prepare to buy the rating yourself!!

cheers
