"...The female passenger aboard United Flight 923 said she was claustrophobic and became very upset and got into some kind of confrontation with the flight crew..."

Ha, wait'll she spends some time in that little cell block. Then she'll have a MUCH better example of being claustrophobic!

As long as her Civil rights weren't violated....What a joke!! Through her ass in jail for a few weeks and see how the public likes it!

My $0.02

Baja.

And fine her for the costs incurred by United, the US Air Force, Massport and who ever else had to cough up money because of her problem.

Are you kidding me? The lady had a reaction that she didn't expect. Anyone that has claustrophobia would know that you basically lose control. Wasn't she 60 years old? Ya, a terrorist to me!! What idiot pilot would declare an emergency and cause all that!! Overreacting maybe? Jesus....

Really you should get a better grip of the world. The UAL Captain acted in the best interest of the entire group of pax. In your world of RJ's and 1 hour segments it may not seem like a big deal. However, coming from LHR where this whole change of rules was created and the fact that the lady could have been a diversionary tactic for something else.

I would suffice it to say it is due to your lack of understanding that you might very well never know what it is like to enter the show.

Also, since the pilots are restricted from interacting with the passengers in such circumstances all information the Captain receives is from the Flight Attendants. The Captain can only make his decisions based on the information he is given and its accuracy.

So go Sunday morning quarterback something you know about..... Like Ipods, cool backpacks, hair gel and paying for training.

Today was supposed to be the day to have that London plot unfold. One of them was going to blow up her baby on the flight........

....overreacting, who are we to judge. Hope it never happens to me. Profile now!

Claustrophobic!!!!!

First of all, the captain reacted correctly...nuff said.

Second, stick this woman with the bill. More than likely she knew she had this issue ahead of time.

Good thing she wasn't in a 757 or soon to be 737-900er. She would've really flipped out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It dosen't get much more roomy than a 3 class 767.

While you love to take cheapshots at virtually everyone that doesn't work for UAL, I do agree with you that the capt. did make the right choice. Nuff said!

What's with all the potshots? Don't wear hairgel....have an ipod for working out.....didn't pay for training .......and don't even know what a camelback is? Is that slang for an Arab? Yes, I don't fly a big 747 Capt. America, but I also don't do 1 hr legs either. I did a 4.5 hr leg yesterday. You started off somewhere too, so you don't have to be a jackass about it. The lady was 60 something with her 70 something year old husband. The lady even told the FA's that she was starting to have a panic attack. Granted, you never know, but the pilot elected to DECLARE AN EMERGENCY and ask for an escort. He could of diverted because of an unruly passenger and that was it, but HE overreacted to the situation. Even the officals on Fox News was saying he made a big deal out of nothing. Even Bill Oreily was asking some airport offical about that. So, I think it was overkill. Just my opinion. Imagine if that was your mom or dad that just freaked out. Why you got to be such a prick? Hey, I would too if I had to sit on a padded ring for the hems. Plus, constantly being reminded by those commercials that I'm not healthy enough for sex would drive me nuts too. No pension.......goes on huh? Prick

If you were looking to get rid of verbiage that would help with less gayness profile, that would be start.

typical untied!! Capt. didnt even pull off the runway so other people could land. would it have been too difficult to get onto a taxiway before unloading 200 peeps??

i love freight.

Back in the day before Papachristou v. The City of Jacksonville, the executive branch of government could pick on alleged vagrants for simply being alleged vagrants. Now they have to pick on pilots walking to their plane with a bottle of Dasani water in their hands. My, how times haven't changed.

Captain,

It appears that there were members of the Friends of Aviation Minds on board. When those guys do their deal I think landing is required. Also, I believe all carriers are operating on the Threat level check list. If you want to review that information you will find that certain situations do require declaring an emergency and landing asap.

By the way this flight was one that was ticketed by the potential hijackers. So when you are flying a suspect flight and the unusual happens would you not be on heightened alert? Of course between SFO and SBA nothing ever happens so it could not possibly happen on a flight from LHR to IAD. By the way we at UAL also lost two airplanes on 9/11 and are very wary of any events in the cabin that could cause disaster. If the guy did nothting and this turned out to be a major event you would be on here saying what an idiot he was for not stopping.

So go save the world 70 people at a time.

...NewsCenter 5 learned there was a Catherine Mayo from Vermont who wrote for the Daily Times of Pakistan in 2003. The woman who was arrested is a U.S. citizen, authorities said.

Midflight, passengers said the 59-year-old woman was pacing the aisles and making many trips to the bathroom.

"She was always walking up and down the corridors, locking herself in the bathroom, and apparently she was passing notes to the captain," passenger Matthew Bailey said.

After she pulled her pants down, an air marshal and a corrections officer tackled her, threw her into the bathroom door and handcuffed her, passengers said.

"She got wrestled to the floor in the galley area," Bailey said.

Sounds like a case of the "mile high club" gone badly, to me...hold the Mayo.

What is your opinion of the AA flight that was returned to LHR a couple of weeks ago on its flight to BOS? You know the flight that was sent back to LHR because they found one of the passengers on board was on a watch list. Is that Captain an idiot also? This is a dangerous world, that flight was targeted according to information in the UK press so you need to adjust your thoughts outside of SLC. I guess the only worries out there are case of big ears from the inbreading.

I think you confused SLC with DBQ.

If have to return for a disturbance in cabin I wil let ATC know the real reason when I switch over to Approach (call it a medical emergency, or whatever you wanna call it). The last thing I need is a trigger happy AF punk off my shoulder, ready to shoot my ass off...

I almost can't blame the lady for going whacko- I mean, no MP3 payer, no water, no nothing allowed, and she is crammed in a coach seat. Might drive anyone crazy.....

Ok, I am just kidding, but seriously.... pretty brutal travel conditions out of London now. (Not that I am saying they shouldn't be doing it, just stating the facts...)

Don't worry, a C152 doesn't produce enough of a heat signature for a AIM-9 to track.

Worry about practicing your short field takeoffs.

Big ears from the inbreeding!! LOL...I just about pissed myself. No, I got the banjo though. Listen, you're right about what you've said so I'll back off my statement. My point was simply that it was an elderly lady, but the PIC didn't know the full situation, so he had a checklist to follow and he did just that. I guess you really can't take a chance with these terrorists. I'll give you that. I didn't know this flight was specifically targeted. So I'll admit fault and maybe it was the correct way to handle the situation, it just seemed abit extreme. You accept my apology? Also, why you bashing me in the nuts for being a regional pilot? Like I said, I'd love to move on, but the industry dictates when I do. K?

Sluggo,

Shouldn't you be out practicing landings? Heard yesterday that FAA might soon require Fedex pilots to actually keep the A/C on the runway after touchdown, instead of running off the runway.

Nothing a few rounds of 20MM can't cure.

Go back and read the 9/11 NORAD transcripts.

Fighter jocks wanted permission to shoot down a mis-identified airliner. All ticked off and no place to go; fortunately for the people on that airliner, the permission was denied.

My apologies for jumping off the rope. Just hate to see how UAL in all forms continues to get monday morning quarterbacked in every facet of its daily existence. The guys worked with what they had in an unusual situation. In the spirit of Al Haynes and Dave Cronin, thinking outside the box and erring on the side of caution saved those two airplanes.

You say she was elderly but she was only 59 or 60 depending on which news source is reporting. Not sure that is OLD since I am staring down 60. (by the way I am against changing the law to allow flying to 65 but that is another topic for another day). Also, the threats may actually come from someone like her versus clean shaven 20 year olds. We just don't know.

Peace and my apologies.

I reread them. I didn't see anything like that.
