I posted this over on Doc's site, but thought I would see what you'll thought as well...

I have a question about the DANDD arrival, and before I get started here is a link to the DANDD arrival in KDEN.

http://naco.faa.gov/d-tpp/0413/09077DANDD.PDF

On the arrival form KIPPY to CLEVE, the Maximum Authorized Altitude is 17,000 ft.

However, if you look at the note for DANDD intersection, it reads 'turbojets expect to cross at FL 190 and 250 KIAS'.

These seem to be contradictory. I asked the center controller about it the other night and her response was that the MAA was for 'CATEGORY B' aircraft. I can't for the life of me think what an appraoch category has to do with the MAA on an arrival. Perhaps she meant 'Group B' aircraft, but I still don't see how that would apply.

Any thoughts?

My Take...

A guess,
It seems that the MAA is designed to separate fast and slow traffic. Category B aircraft (no light jets yet) are slower then Cat C and D. The approach says turbojet expect crossing altitude higher than the MAA or as assigned by ATC. No confusion since the MAA was designed not for frequency interference but for separation of aircraft of different speed.

BTW, great question you stumped me...

I spoke with the folks at the FAA hq, and was told this was an error. A notam is to be published shortly.

Nice catch. I think it would be fun to try to get from FL450 to 17,000 between KIPPY and CLEVE.

From the KDEN notams...

UAR 01/014 DEN DANDD FIVE ARRIVAL
FROM OVER KIPPY TO CLEVE, DISREGUARD MAA 17000=

..., DISREGUARD ...

Is that a double negative?

If one has guarded, but not yet reguarded, should one stop where one is, or should one go on to unguard that which was previously guarded? Or should one just stop at guarding and not guard again? If one has not yet guarded at all, should they take care to guard once, but not twice? Or should the unguarded remain unguarded completely?

Somewhere around 4000fpm @ 250 kts. Sounds like a Disneyland E ticket ride to me!
