I've never been in a 717, but if you're lucky enough to have a "D" seat or a "B" seat in a 9, the comfort level of a CL-65 is competitive IMO.
Unless those new engines you have are easier to sinc in the 717, any row close to the powerplant in a -9 is sheer torture.
Now, if I'm rich enough to ride in First Class, then all bets are off. BTW, do you have a 1st class configuration on AirTran or is it just another cattle car?
