Delta to shift flights at Cincinnati hub

By LISA CORNWELL

The Associated Press
1:46 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2010
CINCINNATI — Delta Air Lines Inc. said Tuesday that it plans to reduce operations at Cincinnati's main airport from two concourses to one and take over the functions of a subsidiary that now provides ground-handling services at the airport.
The changes could lead to layoffs for 840 Regional Elite Airline Services employees that now handle ground operations such as gate, ticket counter and ramp duties for Delta Connection carriers at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Regional Airport.
All flight operations for Delta and Delta Connection flights now handled at Concourses A and B will be shifted to Concourse B, Delta said in a memo sent Tuesday to Cincinnati-based employees. Delta closed a third concourse in 2008.
The changes take place May 1 and will not change Delta's previously announced plans to operate 160 to 170 flights a day from Cincinnati this summer, said Gil West, senior vice president of airport customer service for Delta.
The switch from Regional Elite Services is another step to try to return Delta's Cincinnati hub to profitability, West said. He said the Cincinnati operations "can no longer support two work groups performing the same function."
The 50 gates Delta now operates at the airport will be cut to 28 with the consolidation to one concourse, Delta spokeswoman Kristin Baur said.
Delta will increase operational staffing at the airport. "On the airport customer service side combined with our Cincinnati reservation centers, we'll have approximately 100 we will be hiring," Baur said.
Regional Elite employees interested in those positions will get preferential consideration, and Delta will offer separation packages and transfers to other airports, Baur said.
Airport officials said they were still assessing the impact of the latest of several downsizings over the past few years at Delta's Cincinnati hub.
"The announcement released today by Delta Air Lines to consolidate its operations in Concourse B and resulting job layoffs is very disheartening to the airport and the tri-state community," John Mok, the airport's chief executive officer, said in a statement released Tuesday."
Mok said that up to 120 concessionaire employees currently working in Concourse A could lose their jobs if the airport can't work out other options.

How bout they close down the POS terminal 2 and move everybody there to terminal A. That would only close down 2 restaurants and one magazine stand and it would shut down a TSA checkpoint. Oh wait, thats way to good of an idea so they will never do it.

That was in the airport board's plan a few years ago. They want to bulldoze that end of the ramp. Not sure if it's still in the mix though.

That wouldn't have any effect on the DL/OH situation. Besides, CalEx just left Concourse A and I much prefer my 2 1/2 minute trip from the employee bus to gate 4 :D

wasn't insinuating that it would help the DL issues. What it would do is possibly allow all of the business's in A to stay open(which there are quite a few), it would close a TSA checkpoint completely(the one for A and B still has to remain open to run B) which would save everybody money, it would only impact 2 restaurants and a magazine stand in Terminal 2(so maybe 1/8 the total job losses that closing Term A would have), and it would get us out of that ********************ty ass old terminal.

I dont know, it was just an idea I was throwing out that would potentially save some jobs as well as save some money by shutting down a TSA checkpoint.

If the airport board could convince the airlines in T2 to pay for their move to T3, concourse A (think counters, gate desks, employee break rooms, offices, IT infrastructure, etc etc), then I think this could happen and would be a good thing for CVG. Hell, maybe Delta would pay to move them all and then negotiate out of the lease for Concourse A (Delta still liable for the lease on that concourse through 2015, whether they occupy it or not.)

But like the previous poster said...it's just a thought...I'm sure the airport board is all over it...lol

:erm:

someone on airliners.net said that ASA will stop flying to CVG April 5th.

It would explain how ASA is starting MEM ops on April 6th, more than a dozen cities, and Pinnacle/Mesaba is pulling out of those markets on April 5th.

Normal, quarterly Delta Shuffling of DCI carriers...wouldn't want anyone to get too comfy! LOL

I'm flying into CVG all month. Maybe they pulled the ATL guys out.

Why not? Because Delta couldn't play them against each other?

Yup and looking ahead Mesaba will be doing a few CR9 flights back to JFK, and new stuff to BOS, CVG, and ATL

what will happen to freedom airlines who is based out of CVG, do you think they will close that base for them

-Maybe Freedom will open a base in HELL....

Pretty sad! I bet tower still won't let anyone land on 18C/36C. How times can change in the DCI world! Good luck to all the commuters to JFK.
