I noticed lots of B752s at NRT and am curious who does all that flying. Do you get deadheaded there from a US domicile, work a 4day trip, and deadhead home? Or do you operate one of the B763 flights over there (SEA? PDX?) and then fly the 752 for a couple days while there, then operate back?

What do those schedule lines look like? Thanks.

Some are DH over and some are fly over. 6, 7, 8, and up to 12 day trips.

So do they go pretty senior cuz the free money (DH's) or junior cuz the trip length?

On a related note...friend who is on the B772 told me that DAL is down to only 2 flights/day out of ATL on the B772, and they DH to most of their trips...he said he made a LOT of extra money last year with all the DH'ing.

Crews who fly the 757 also fly the 767, and several 767s fly nonstop from US cities daily, like SFO, PDX, and HNL. So, crews get over to NRT via the nonstop flights, and then spend up to 10 days over there (up to 12 day total trips) doing turns or one leg days to Guam, Saipan, Palau, Beijing, and Shanghai. I think SEA guys fly nonstop to Osaka and Beijing, then off to Narita or Guam, and then back through NRT. The LAX 75/76 guys usually hit Japan through Hawaii first, usually laying over in HNL first, then rotate back and forth to Hawaii to Narita, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. But, the guys who get to see the most Asia on the 75/76 are the SEA, LAX, and MSP pilots. The trips can be senior, some people want to commute once per month, and a lot of time off between big trips can be had. But, not everyone wants to be gone that long, so looking at the bid awards, the 12 day trips can go fairly junior in some bases.

Other planes that have up to 12 day trips to Asia are the 744 pilots and A330 pilots. The 777 pilots don't have the longer trips, with a 6 or 7 day trip the max for those guys. Certain planes see certain cities, too, like Singapore currently only sees the 777 via NRT.

As always, good stuff GL. Thanks. Yeah I find it very interesting how Delta works their crew schedules with such disparity between routes and crew bases. BOS is another example...the A330, B763 and B764 (different pilot groups iirc) all flying out of there. I'm guessing they do a 6 day trip from their base (ATL/DTW/MSP) to AMS/CDG/LHR etc and then a BOS turn before coming home?

Didn't DAL have narrowbodies in Europe back in the 90s?

My B772 friend said the SYD trips are one of his favorites...LAX DH, operate the SYD turn, DH back to ATL, gone for ~6 days (often he alternate DH's on the redeye home so even less) and pick up ~40hrs of credit. $$$$

Do you prefer the Asia flying for that reason vs the basic Europe turns (you're on the 75/6, right)?

I like the Asia stuff, but since I am ATL based, it is limited. Depending on the plane type and the range it can fly, certain bases usually have certain "theaters" they fly to. The 767 can't fly nonstop from ATL to Asia, so ATL based crews fly more trips to Europe and South America, with a few trips (mainly FOs as the "third guy") to supplement the SEA and LAX guys on the transpacific trips. So, the NYC guys on the 75/76 do more Europe, ATL does more Europe and South America, and the SEA and LA guys do more Asia. The DTW and MSP 75/76 guys seem to be doing more domestic stuff.

Now all that is just the 75/76. The A330 has bases in ATL, SEA, and DTW. They do a lot of Europe and South America too, and because an A330 flies from ATL to HNL nonstop, that is their current link to Asia. But, a lot of their flying to Asia seems to be shrinking in favor of more Europe stuff. The 744 does a lot of 12 day trips, and a lot is "long stuff" like JFK to NRT, but also smaller stuff like NRT to Manilla and Taipei. The only "Europe" that fleet flies to is Tel Aviv from JFK. The 777 seems to be moving more flights from ATL (2 nonstops now--Jo-berg and Dubai), and shifting them to Detroit. There is some DH'ing as you say, with 2 cities (LAX and MSP) having flights to SYD and NRT, but without a 777 pilot base there.

Hope that helps. Lots of variety out there if you want it.
