Had this discussion today. I'm looking for an FAR that specifically says you need to carry current charts onboard your aircraft for the area you're flying through. Under part 135, it's there, a specific FAR that says you need to carry current charts, etc. But what about part 91? Couldn't find it anywhere. Sure there's the FAR that says you need to become familiar with all aspects of that flight, but who's to say you can't go look at a current chart in the FBO, verify nothing has changed, or if something has changed write it down, then go off flying. So what you yalll think? Do you even need a chart at all? VFR, IFR. If you get ramp checked and they see an expired sectional, can they bust you?

There is no reg saying you have to carry current charts. I've never been asked for a sectional on a ramp check. But all my ramp checks have been so the FED can check a few boxes.

I'd be leery about IFR with out charts, more so VFR without a section.

There is a reg requiring current and appropriate charts in part 91. It's just located in Subpart F which only applys to jet operators, and only for IFR or VFR on top at night......it's a very similar regulation to the ones found in 135 and 121...
