Having a conversation/argument...One of those bad weather days. Where does it say or imply that you (as PIC) need to have with you current approach plates. 91.103? is all that I could come up with.
You are required to have either a current approach plate or the current written discription of the approach. The written TERPs description can be instead of the approach. This description is used to draw the approach plates. Personally I wouldn't like to shoot an approach off of that description though.
You only need to have the approach plate w/ the correct amendment number OR a textual description.
Look at the FDC notams for MDW -- published the wrong plate for 31C and the notam states to USE THE PREVIOUS APPROACH PLATE (out of the NOS book with an "expired" date). Why? Because it is the correct plate.
I see this alot here. Everything that is regulatory and accepted procedure is not always going to be found in the "FARs" and if they are are, they usually aren't that specific or to the point. Remember, they are written by lawyers to be used by lawyers when a violation is prosecuted. The catch all here is 91.103 were it states that the pilot shall become familiar with all available information. If a "current" approach chart is available versus an out of date one, which one do you choose? Then again it is not meant to be a conspiracy with Jeppessen that you have to buy the most current chart subscription for the country. Some approach plates haven't changed in 10 years or more. Determine the applicable currency date and go with that. It is just easier/convienent/safer having a current subscription service/book.
