I was originally looking into the Army to become a chopper pilot. However, due to my need for corrective surgery to make the vision requirements, it seems like I'm getting closer to a snowballs chance in hell of getting a pilot slot.

Looking at alternates for that job, someone recommended becoming a crew chief. Not seeing "crew chief" officially listed as a job I was wondering how you become one. Also, how long would I have to be a crew chief before I could get a different MOS, i.e. try for a pilot slot. I appreciate any advice I could get on this.

i am currently a 15T (blackhawk crew chief) for the Arkansas National Guard. 15T is the MOS. also, you can get lasik. i am in the works of going to WOFT but i do need lasik. i am working on finding out weather or not i can get lasik. i know they offer it to active duty but not sure about the NG..

Well, I guess the main question I am trying to have answered is, "Is there any minimum time you have to fulfill in one MOS before you can change MOS's? Or do you have to wait until your contract is up?"

The only problem with eye surgery is that it delays you entrance into the military, and it slaps you with a mountain of medical waivers that only makes it more difficult to be competitive for a flight spot. I figure if I enlist as a Crew Chief and serve under that MOS for like a year or so, I could get good standing in the Army community and have the maintenance backing which would make me more competitive as a WOFT candidate. Then I would get LASIK while inside of the Army. My only problem is I don't want to get STUCK as a crew chief for six years until my contract runs out.
