Hi,

I just started training again after about 14 yrs, i have PVT, with inst and about 295 hrs. I am out of Chicago (PWK), and was wondering about the block time that is scheduled in todays training world. The school i am attending blocks 3 hrs instead if 2 hrs. When i started training back in 91/92 it was always 2 hrs. So now i am paying for 3 hrs for an instructor an 1 for the aircraft. Is this the norm today? Cause it can be a very co$tly venture.

Thanks again.

Which school?

...and what are you doing? Are you spending an hour on a "ground lesson" then a half hour preflight brief, hour flight and half hour post flight brief?

IF so, that may not be so bad...gotta get the knoweldge one way or another.

I'd rather see .75/1.5/.75, but 1/.5/1/.5 isn't so bad either. I usually schedule my students in 2 hour blocks and do .3-.4 on the ground, a good preflight, around an hour of flight and then a .2 post....

I agree. Two hours blocks with typically .3-.7 of ground.

The school is Windy city flyers, and i was charged the first time 3 hours of his time (75hr) which was mostly getting the paperwork for the school out of the way (admin)stuff. I am contemplating getting back into this on the professional level at 37 years old but i do not want to waste my money for time that may not be utilized to the fullest. The times you posted above are what seem more realistic to me like you mentioned. I am paying as i go and can afford to do that 1-2 times a week, but i do not want to get ripped either. Thanks for replying to my post.

You were charged to do paperwork? That is absolutely ridiculous.

Yes, that is part of what sparked this thread. I have another session setup for the weekend, and i plan to question him on this. I do not want to be a dick or anything, but yeah that seems overboard to charge me for giving me the run down of the place and doing paperwork (they are part 61 too). I would hate to ditch them off the bat but gimme a break! I looked at all the other schools and they seemed to be the best and offer the most diverse fleet for training, so i will have to see.

Heck yes it is!

Here in FL our school doesn't charge for ground, so if you block the plane and instructor for three hours and only fly 1.3......you only pay 1.3 ($30/hr instruction). This is a great deal for the students, but a giant caca sandwich for the instructors. But hey, its FL and it's hard to compete being inbetween DCA, Riddle and RAA.

The problem really is that they are blocking 3hrs as default if you are flying. It seems too me that regardless of what is accomplished 3hrs goes to him! I am not used to that kind of structure.

The CFI who works with you during that 3.0 block of time will probably only see $30 for his/her effort.

Just something to consider.
